Received this product in my Birchbox this month and as a curly-hair lady, I was pretty psyched to try it. The packaging touts it as "fabric softener for hair," which sounded weird... yet appealing? The idea is that it's quick-drying and defines & softens curls without weighing them down.
For reference, I'm about a 3a curl. My hair's not coarse - it's fine, but thick, and curly but not kinky.
I have to say, the fabric-softener descriptor is dead-on. I don't mean that in a good way, necessarily. First, the scent is very fabric-softener. I've been smelling it all day. It's not unpleasant. But do I want my head to smell like laundry? Not sure about that.
My curls are soft, for sure. But they also feel gummy, slightly weighted-down, and there's a fine layer of frizz on top. Think 1986-era stand-up comedienne. It's not cute. My hair feels slightly sticky, like it would attract dirt. Because of the feel and smell, I actually get the sense that I DID put fabric softener on my hair.
I've been doing a bit of reading of reviews online and it seems like people with coarser, kinkier hair are having good luck with this product. I think it's maybe just too heavy for my fine hair. I'll finish out the little sample of product, but unless the next time I use it my results are dramatically different, I think Pillow Soft Curls is NOT for me.
