Review of Kat Von D Lock-It by Peskypixie
I have fairly oily skin which has given me issues after moving a few hundred miles. I've been using more moisturizer (Caudalie) and needed a new foundation to conceal the redness and irritation from all the changes over the past six or so months.
Normally I pick up samples and try a product for a few weeks, this foundation I have to admit I was so impressed in the store I purchased it then and there. The color match was spot on, and while the foundation is a pretty thick pigmented formula, I found that it was simple to blend out if needed.
Before applying, I wash my face, prep with a homemade ACV toner, Caudalie Vinosource SOS serum and moisturize. I like a combo of all three of their Vinosource moisturizers, used strategically. I use the Moisturising Sorbet most often, mixing in some of the Intense Moisture Creme as needed, especially around eyes. I will use the Moisturizing Mattifying Fluid in my T Zone if I think I will get shiny later. After my moisturizer has sunk in, I use one pump of MUFE's HD primer and apply all over the face. I wait at least five minutes to apply foundation- need to let the silicones evaporate! Prior to using the Caudalie regimen I used Dr Brandt Pores No More Anti-aging Mattifying Lotion. Personally I feel this is too harsh now, but it might work as another mattifying option if you need it.
For the foundation, I put a pump on the back of my hand and apply with a damp Mac 187 brush, adding more as needed, starting with my nose and working to forehead. After application I use Cornsilk powder (now DC) to set. I find it looks so natural I can simply contour and hilight, I don't need a blush.
If I use the foundation and forget part of my prep the foundation does not last well, my skin overproduces oil and the foundation feels heavy. If I properly prep I just need to blot every few hours. It's a great foundation.
It does not cover everything, but I have to admit, the first thing I noticed after doing my makeup was that I needed a better undereye concealer. Prior to using this my undereye shadows were not too noticeable, but now everything else is fairly perfect when finished, they are the only flaw that stick out. You'll see what I mean if you watch Kat's instructional video- the tattoo under her right eye still needs some concealer, but she has great coverage elsewhere.
Removal- you need a serious remover for this! I use Origins Clean Energy Cleansing oil (love the smell), but any cleansing oil will work. I follow up with First Aid Beauty Face Cleanser, tone and then moisturize. If I slack on any areas (like the base of my nose) I will get a breakout. You cannot sleep in this.
