Review of Make Up For Ever HD Microperfecting Primer in 5 Blue by VVV
I've tried A LOT of primers and I have to say that I really do like Make Up For Ever's HD Microperfecting Primer in No. 5 which is the blue shade. For reference I have dry/sensitive fair/neutral skin with the following issues: dryness, dry patches/texture issues, hormonal acne, redness around nose/mouth.
EXPECTATIONS: I wanted the following things from this primer - help smooth out my skin texture/dryness so my foundation does not catch on it, help even my skin tone & lighten redness, brighten my complextion, keep my foundation looking fresh for 6-8 hours, and make my foundation apply more smoothly/evenly.
APPLICATION: I apply the HD Primer with my fingertips to clean, moisturized skin. I allow 5-10 minutes for my moisturizer to "sink in" before applying. This primer dries VERY quickly so the best thing to do is to apply it to one area of the face at a time, smoothing it over the skin as quickly as possible. Another thing I found tricky about application was that the primer globbed up a bit if I went over the edge of an area that already had primer on it. I make sure now to go over my skin once and once only.
RESULTS: This primer really brightened my complextion and took the redness around my nose and mouth down. My skin was definitely more even looking and felt smooth. When I applied my foundation it did apply more smoothly and it stayed looking fresh for at least 6-7 hours. I still had some issues with dry patches and texture though which I have since corrected by changing moisturizers. The most notable difference right after applying this primer was how much brighter my complextion was - it looks like I got the best night's sleep ever (even when I haven't, lol).
COMPARISONS: The HD Primer has a completely different feel to it than most of the other primers I have tried. It's consistency is similar to that of a lotion and it dries down VERY quickly. I've compared the HD Primer to Smashbox's Photo Finish Primer and found it's like apples and oranges - the Smashbox Primer is very rich feeling going on the skin, takes a while to set, and leaves a velvety sort of feeling on the skin. I'm currently using the HD Foundation and it DOES NOT work with the Smashbox Primer AT ALL - it turns to greasy sludge within an hour of application (and I have dry skin!). I've also tried Pores No More, Medi-Matte, Prime Time, Primer Potion (Brightening), & Smashbox Color Correct - again all completely different from the HD Primer and difficult to compare. The HD Primer is really different and I've found that it's the only primer with color correction that actually does anything. The whitish-blue tone to this primer works really wonderfully for my fair skin - it doesn't make it perfect by any means but it lays the groundwork for my foundation to make my skin look that much better.
BOTTOM LINE: I originally went to Sephora and got samples of the Make Up For Ever HD Microperfecting Primer in No. 1 (Green), No. 2 (Mauve), and No. 5 (Blue), so that I could test the product out and see which shade worked best for my skin before I purchased a bottle. This is what I would recommend people interested in this product do - definitely assess what your needs are and try several shades. I wanted to try the green shade because I have redness but I found it made me a bit too sallow and that the blue shade took down my redness far better without making me look sallow. I think through the use of this product I've found my "redness" is more "ruddy-ness" and the blue cancels this out much better while brightening my complextion. I'm very happy with the blue shade and will definitely repurchase.
