I've been using this mascara for about a month now. It's pretty good but I hesitate to call it HG because it's not quite perfect and I'm incredibly fickle when it comes to mascaras. Currently, I'm using this mascara layered over Shiseido mascara base and I'm applying Shu Lash Builder several nights a week before bed. Between the three products, my lashes look better than they've ever looked. However, after using this mascara for a week or two, it started to dry out despite closing the cap securely each time after use, and little fibers started appearing on the brush. I pick them off each time I use it, but the keep developing, which makes me think it's the mascara formula. Also, sometimes the fibers get in my eyes and I need to pick them out throughout the day. Performance-wise, this mascara is excellent at holding a curl but it's a tad clumpy so I usually go over my lashes with lash comb afterwards. Applying a second coat is pretty much out of the question unless you want really spidery lashes, so I usually only use one careful application.
I'm not sure that I'd repurchase at this point. This is a good mascara but it reminds me of the L'oreal fiber lash mascara that I used to use, and it's much cheaper and easier to find.
I am supremely happy with this mascara and feel I can finally rest! For me this has it all:
Adds volume that is natural looking, holds my curl, emphasizes length, stays on all day w/o clumping, flaking, smudging. No balling up even with several coats. I don't need a primer with this. Comes off with makeup remover at night.
Brush is curved and I thought I would hate it but it's a no brainer as to usage.
I could care less about the packaging but I even like the gunmetal looking tube because I can find it easily in my sea of black cases.
Price is high and I have to order but at least this delivers. I will definitely order again. And I think it IS better than Shu Basic which is saying ALOT!!
Completely agree with volcomizedgrl’s review. This has become my replacement for the beloved Shu Uemura Basic mascara.
Some additional thoughts:
- It’s a bit clumpier than Basic but still buildable. I actually need less coats than Basic to get the same effect.
- It holds a curl well.
- The packaging feels cheaper than Basic, but I like that the cap lightly ‘clicks’ to indicate that the tube is fully closed.
My goal with mascara is to make my short, straight asian lashes look curled and naturally feather-y, and this does the trick. Really happy I took a chance and tried this. It's my new go-to mascara.
**I wanted to update my initial review: Everything pretty much still stands, but after much use, the mascara has gotten better/manageable. Because it was new, it was coating way too heavily, but after daily, continued use, I've now officially found my permanent mascara. Just wish it was a tad cheaper and it wasn't online-order only.**
I'll start off by saying, I'm comparing this to Shu Uemura's Basic mascara (as this is the standard by which I compare ALL mascaras to), which they discontinued over a year ago (to my dismay). I was just on my last leg/tube of the Basic mascara when I set out on my journey for a new, maybe better, mascara. I was about 7 different brands in when I had to reorder my Depsea toner and decided to see if they had any new mascaras (I've tried all but one of their mascaras—none of which I particularly liked since they pale in comparison to the Basic).
Now, my impressions:
1.) Clumps more/coats heavier than the Basic. Oddly enough, the formula seemed almost identical to the Basic. But, it's definitely not. I noticed after the first use that there seemed to be little hairs/fuzz on the wand. When I pulled at it, I realized it's actually the formula. Very interesting. But, it's a little messy when I apply it—hence the clumping (not too severe, though).
2.) Doesn't hold a curl as well as the Basic. However, it still holds a curl well and is still much better than some other brands.
3.) Price. It's definitely on the high end, but, IMO, worth it.
4.) It's got a curved wand to (supposedly) enhance curling. I'm not a fan of curved wands (I won't get into my reasons).
5.) Waterproofness. I'd say it's "water-resistant," not waterproof. It's held up pretty well so far. I wear it all day at work, get home to wash my face (lightly splashing water around my eyes), and head to the gym to sweat some fat off. The worst mascaras don't even last til lunch break, and the best (the Basic) last until I get back from the gym—the Stretch Xtreme Precise lasted. The ultimate test is the wet sauna, which I haven't tried yet.
At $28, I was pretty sure I was going to return it, which I've never done with their other mascaras, despite disliking all the rest (even the supposed Basic "replacement"). However, to my surprise, a week after daily use (I can tell I dislike a mascara after only using it once), I can safely say I've found my new everyday mascara—finally (let's just hope Shu Uemura doesn't screw this up again by discontinuing it)!
