My girlfriend swore by this product but I was not impressed. I fine hair (but LOTS of hair), applied it only at the ends, but it still weighed my hair down.
Ok - this might be a little long and as much as I don't like writing a review that reads like a science textbook, maybe all this info will be helpful to someone (or perhaps someone will be able to explain if the variance of the ingredients is even meaningful):
I have been searching for a replacement for my much loved but d/c John Frieda Total Sheer Blonde Color Protector. I received a sample of this from Sephora.com resultant of one of my very few orders from them, It took me over 2 weeks to use up the entire packet becuz it takes so little product to get the job done. I LOVE this stuff - gives me shine that lasts around 6 - 7 hours w/out weighing down my hair. I had to get more..here is where it gets interesting:
I no longer have the Sephora packet, but according to their website, its called BrilliantGlossing Cream from Fekkai Advanced. A 4 oz tube = $23; a 7 oz tube = $32. Ingredients (from Sephora's web site): Water, Dimethicone, Dimethiconol, Cyclopentasiloxane, Phenyl Trimethicone, Olea Europaea (Olive) Fruit Oil, Polyacrylamide, Olive Glycerides, Synthetic Wax, Hydroxyethyl Behenamidopropyl Dimonium Chloride, Polyquaternium-67, Butylene Glycol, C13-14 Isoparaffin, Bismuth Oxychloride, Panthenol, Cinnamidopropyltrimonium Chloride, Vitis Vinifera (Grape) Fruit Extract, Hydrolyzed Conchiolin Protein, Laureth-7, Fragrance, Mica, Titanium Dioxide, Methylchloroisothiazolinone, Methylisothiazolinone, Yellow 10.
Now, going to Sephora is extremely inconvenient for me and if possible, I like to avoid shipping charges, so imagine my pleasant surprise when I saw this at Target. I did some reading on-line and - if you believe what's out there - apparently Fekkai (whose brand was apparently purchased by Procter & Gamble in 2008) has decided to re-package some of their products to allow some to be distributed thru salons and more exclusive outlets (Sephora, dept stores, etc) and n/k/a Fekkai Advanced and the rest to become known as Fekkai Classic - now available at mass distributors such as Target. In addition to the packaging changes, there were to be changes in the some formulas as well.
So, I purchased a 4 oz tube at Target for $21.00 ($2.00 cheaper than Sephora). The packaging says Fekkai (not Advanced) Glossing (not Brilliant Glossing) Cream. The ingredients are also a bit different: Water, Dimethicone, Dimethiconol, Cyclopentasiloxane, Butylene Glycol, Phenyl Trimethacone, Olea Europea (olive) Fruit Oil, Polyacrylamide, Dimethicone PEG 8a, Meadowfomate, C13-14 Isoparaffin, Bismuth Oxychloride, Vitis Vinifera (grape) seed extract, Hydrolized Conchiolin Protein, Phosphylipids, Cystine Bis-PG Propyl Silanetriol, Hydrolyzed Wheat Protein/PVP Crosspolymer, Hydrolyzed Rice Protein, Tocopheryl Acetate, Retinyl Palmitate, Ascorbyl Palmitate, Laureth-7, Fragrance, Mica, Titanium Dioxide (CI 7789), DMDM Hydantoin, Iodopropynyl Butyl Carbanate, Yellow 10 (CI 47005)
The shine from Target's tube did not seem to last as long as stuff from Sephora - probably 5 hours. Did not weigh down my hair, so if I hadn't tried the stuff from Sephora, I would more than likely be satisfied w/ the stuff from Target. Alas, I want more - the longer lasting shine I have already experienced thru the Sephora stuff. I will try this a few more days (I used 3 days) to see if this changes and will update.
I just went to Ulta (which is also listed on the FF website as an authorized distributor) and it has the Advanced, Brilliant version, but again, the ingrediants are a bit different from Sephora and - here is what is even weirder - the ingredients listed on Ulta's web site are different from those listed on the 1.6 oz travel size tube I just purchased $9.00. (Ulta has the 4 oz for $23 and the 7 oz for $32 - same $ as Sephora.)
Ingredients from Ulta's web site: Water, Dimethicone, Cyclopentasiloxane, Dimethiconol, Propylene Glycol, Polyacrylamide, Olea Europaea (Olive Oil) Fruit Oil, Phenyl Trimethicone, C13-14 Isoparaffin, PEG 8 Methicone, Ricinus Communis (Castor) Seed Oil, Bismuth Oxychloride (CI 77163), Laureth-7, Sodium PCA, Panthenol, Cinnamidopropyltrimethyl Ammonium Chloride, Dimethicone PEG-8, Meadowfoamate, Fragrance/Parfum, Methylisochloroisothiazolinone, Yellow 5 (CI 19140).
Ingredients from the tube I just purchased: Water, Dimethicone, Dimethiconol, Cyclopentasiloxane, Butylene Glycol, Phenyl Trimethicone, Olea Europea (olive) Fruit Oil, Polyacrylamide, Olive Glycerides, Hydroxyethyl Behenamidopropyl Dimonium Chloride, Polyquaternium-67, C13-14 Isoparaffin, Bismuth Oxychloride, Panthenol, Cinnamidopropyltrimonium Chloride, Vitis Vinifera (grape) Fruit Extract, Hydrolyzed Conchiolin Protein, Laureth-7, Fragrance, Mica, Titanium Dioxide, DMDM Hydanton, Iodopropynyl Butyl Carbamate, Yellow 10.
I will update my review on how the tube from Ulta performs after I have had a chance to use it. I tried to double check the ingredients I typed from my Target and Ulta tubes - I apologize in advance for any missspellings - the font on the tubes is TINY!
Bottom line so far: ingredients and packaging differ depending on where you purchase. Ulta's prices = Sephora's prices. According to Sephora's web site, this item is available only on-line, I have not been to one of their actual stores to confirm. Ulta is far more convenient for me than Sephora, so I am hopeful this tube will be as good as the product I used from Sephora...giving this 4 stars based upon the Sephora version...to be updated....
UPDATE 08/01/10 been using FF Advanced Glossing Creme for the past couple of weeks just to see if that would work once I run out of my JF or if I need to continue searching for a replacement. While FF is expensive, it does work just like the JF and since it only takes a teeeeeeny amount, that will definitely defray the cost. Also discovered worx best on wet hair prior to blowdrying = I have found my HG replacement (I purchased a travel size from Ulta).
After I found that they sell Fredric Fekkai at my neighborhood shoppers drug mart, I came on here to see which products I should try. I was looking for a really nice smoothing cream, and this is what I got! At first I was really in love with this product, but now I don't think it's anything spectacular. This doesn't stop me from using it everyday though. I purchased the smaller size one just in case I didn't like it, because it IS quite pricey. I will repurchase the larger size in the future. :)
I tried this today after reading the reviews. This product rocks!!!! I have straight hair but with styling and coloring, it can look a bit dull and just feel dry on the ends. I used a pea size before drying my hair and it made my hair feel like silk. The ends were nice and smooth and my hair just layed really soft. I curled it with a curling iron and the curls were just beautiful and shiny. This product just made me hair feel healthy and look shiny. Love it!!!!!!! It's a bit pricey but for the amount you use, it will last a long time. I just love what this did for my hair. Healthy and shiny.......what more could you ask for? Get this stuff!
Thank you Fekkai! I have super dry curly hair and my hair just sucks this stuff up. It is a bit pricey but a little goes a long way so keep that in mind. I have really thick medium lenght hair and I use about a nickel size and thats plenty. I put a little on bf i blow dry and flat iron my hair straight and it looks amazing. Since I dont wash my hair every day, when I need a touch up I just smooth a really really small amount and my hair is super shiney. I dont think I will every stop buying this. Also some days if I dont feel like doing anything at all to my hair I jsut smooth a little bit of this and then pull it back and it really cuts down on the fly aways. If you have dry thick unmanagable hair you will love this product. If you have finer hair, this product can also give you some volume but only use a little.
I LOVE THIS STUFF!!! Picked this up years ago and have never been without it as a daily end to my hair routine. If I'm having a bad day, I just swipe some of this stuff through my hair and it looks shiny and gorgeous.
I have fine, limp hair but it's always shiny and manageable after a tiny bit of this product. Use it mainly on the ends and whatever is left, lightly dab onto the upper portion. The larger tube lasts almost a year for me and a little goes a long way. If you don't wash your hair on a daily basis, make sure not to sleep with your hair and this product touching your face or pillow. This also works well as a primer before flatironing so no need for additional oil/silicone products to prep. If you overdo it with the amount, it will make your hair limp.
I can't live without this product. It's a HG for my hair.
This is a review for the Brilliant Glossing Olive Oil Cream. I noticed that the ingredients on my tube are slightly modified from the list here.
Anyway, this stuff did nothing for my hair good or bad. It did not add shine or reduce frizz. But, it didn't make it greasy either. Simply couldn't tell any product was there. I didn't care for the scent. Too much like perfume... But, the scent faded fast. So even if you bought it to make your hair smell nice, you would be disappointed. That is why I gave it 1 lippie only. I would not buy again.
I really like this but you can't go more than one day without washing or rinsing your hair. You also have to use even less than the recommended amount or else your hair will be greasy. My hair is no longer frizzy or unmanageable. Instead, it is soft and shiny. Well worth the investment.
I absolutely love this. I have naturally kinky, curly, hard to manage hair but I straighten it more often than not. I absolutely love this to tame my hair whether its curly or straight.
I especially love to use this on wet hair before I blow-dry. The end result is much more sleek and frizz free.
You can also put a pea sized amount in your hair right before you straighten for a soft and shiny effect.
Bottom line, this is amazing.
I tame flyaways with this too, just be careful not to get this all over your scalp. You can use it on wet or dry hair but if used in excess, it can leave your scalp feeling a bit oily.
Again, this is a brilliant product. I recommend it to everyone. It tames frizz and leaves hair smooth.
Worth the price. I'm on my 3rd tube.
When I first bought this product I was kind of disappointed. I got it from bath and body works and it had a weird, almost old clay like smell that was just nasty and made my hair reek for the first couple minutes after putting it on. It worked good but I was so confused why everyone was raving about the smell. So I went to Ulta and picked up another tube and smelled it and i was like wow this smells great sooo different from the crap I have at home... So I repurchased and have been happy with it since. Its definitely true that if you use too much especially on dry hair it looks greasy and weighs hair down, but when I put just a pea sized drop on my damp chin length hair it gives my hair a beautiful sheen and helps softly define my waves or looks super sleek when i dry and straighten my hair. It definitely helped calm the frizzies and I can use just a dab on dry hair to smooth any fly aways. And I love that it never leaves my hair feeling stiff or sticky.. always smooth and soft and never greasy looking (unless I get too much product). It definitely blows the John Freida frizz ease stuff I was using out of the water--no more greasy hair or hands. And the squeeze tube is perfect, its easy to dispense just a pea sized amount each time. Definitely don't purchase this product if it smells off though--its probably expired!
