Things I love:
the staying power ~ I have no issues with smudging or fading
I use it it as a 'regular' eyeliner and for tightlining. I can't say how it stands up to the waterline, as using black there would just close up my eyes.
it's soft and creamy ~ no tugging or having to 'work' to apply it
the color ~ it's a deep, rich black with no glitter or shimmer or harshness to it at all.
Things I don't love:
the softness means you have to be careful sharpening it...take care and it will be fine
the price ~ it makes me wince just a teeny bit...doesn't mean it's not worth it, but still...
Would I buy it again? Yep. Would I recommend it? Yep.
This is the best (although not absolutely perfect) eyeliner I have found in my 30 years of wearing eyeliner. The Sephora saleswomen at midtown NYC location unanimously told me this was the best, long lasting eyeliner in their store. I bought the black color "Zero" and it is a rich black color that lasts and lasts. Although some reviewers complain about the soft texture (as we lose a lot of the pencil when we are sharpening the point), I choose to think positive that as I am 43, I am grateful not to have any eye products that tug the eye (and potentially create more wrinkles, stress on the eye). When I apply this pencil on the upper lid, I use an eyeliner brush to perfect the line quickly (as the "soft" texture does set into place).
As I am Korean, Asian Eyes have a different shape (esp the upper lid which tends to be more "flat", with less of a hooded lid which encourages easy smudging).
Some tips to prevent smudging:
- I used a primer, Too Faced's "Shadow Insurance" which IMMEDIATELY worked (one eyeliner side didn't budge while the other side without the primer smudged a bit). I prefer Too Faced's over Urban Decay Primer Potion as UD's Primer makes my eye shadow cake.
- For a richer, "Sophia Loren", cat eye look (like liquid eyeliner, I put black or navy iridescent powder eyeshadow on top) and seal it with Trish McEvoy's Finish Line.
I "accidentally" tested this eyeliner to Sephora's Waterproof Eyeliner (self-sharpening version). I wore one on one eye and the other eye (w/no sealant or primer). I accidentally fell asleep and when I woke up, the Urban Decay 24/7 pencil had minimal smudging and strong color compared to the Sephora pencil (Sephora's was still very impressive but just did not hold up to Urban Decay's legendary reputation).
Other brands and types of eyeliners I have tried (I am 43 and I have been wearing eyeliner (navy and black) since I was 14 years old):
- Sephora's Waterproof Eyeliner - 2nd place compared to UD 24/7 Pencil.
- Make Up Forever's Waterproof Eyeliner Pencil: pretty good but less rich color and doesn't last as long and smudges more than Urban Decay
- EVERY pencil out there (Almay, C. Dior, Chanel, E. Arden, Maybelline, Revlon, Stila etc.). None of these compare to UD. When I was a teen and sometimes even now, I'd light the tip of the Maybelline brow pencil with a lighter to "lightly" melt the eyeliner, and then when it was ALMOST hard/cool, I'd draw on my upper line and it would "cool" and set perfectly and not budge (this technique does require some skill and a makeup artist taught me this).
- Bobbi Brown's Long Wear Gel Eyeliner: this is the longest lasting liner in a pot/cake eyeliner (more smudge proof and doesn't dry out like Stila's Smudge Pot). Fun and glamorous to use, but I find in the long haul, this smudges more than the UD 24/7 Pencil.
- Liquid liners (whether brush or pen style) simply do not work for me as when my eyes water, I have a horrible huge black smudge on my eye which unless I'm lucky enough to have a friend inform me, I have no idea I'm walking around with a partial black eye.
***UPDATE 3/21/10 - I just bought Tarina Tarantino's Eye Pencils and they are even better than Urban Decay's (lasts longer, doesn't smudge, beautiful colors)
I love to use black eyeliner to define my almond eyes. I used to use wet black e/s but after it dries - it powders off. However, I read up a review about this and decide to give it a try. I was so amazed how smooth and DARK the zero was. I absolutely love it. It goes on so easy on my top waterline.
It is a 'lil pricey and I'm so scared to sharpen it b/c I know how much is shaved off everytime I sharpen it. Overall - it's great to use on your upper waterline and give your eyes that smokey-cat eye :)
I love this eyeliner. It is a really intense black. True to the name it glides on easily, which is a pro and a con. Pro because it makes it is easier to put on, con because it can smudge easily as well. The one thing I don't like about this eyeliner is that when I put it on my lower water line, it does smudge under my eye at the end of the day.
If I could have only one eye liner, this would be it.
This is my first review - my apologies if it's a little short and vague, but this eyeliner is awesome. It does exactly what it says, glides right on. It lasts for a decent amount of time, and comes off very easily with the Urban Decay makeup remover.I like to set it with a black eyeshadow, usually zero from UD especially on my lower lashline. If I don't, it comes off quickly. As far as lining the lashline, it works great, I set that with a shadow too most of the time to be safe. I've used this liner for about a year and have owned two within that time. I'm probably about halfway through on my second. I would recommend this product to anyone, from beginners to more advanced makeup artists/experimenters. Hope this helped :)
LOVE THIS EYELINER! it makes tightlining a DREAM! SO EASY :) the black color is nice, for a pencil. great quality, creamier than MUFE aqua eyes (i like using MUFE for waterlline though) will definitly repurchase again and again and again!
-VERY deep stark black -- LUVVVV it!!
-Glides on waterline VERY easily-- it's a dream to tightline with!!
-Very Good staying power
-Does NOT irritate my eyes at all
-expensive, considering it product doesn't last long (see next point)
-pencil is so soft, that sharpening causes you to lose a lot of product; therefore pencil does NOT last long!
I'm a black eye pencil addict!
So far, this is the blackest-black eye pencil I have found which has good staying power. The best staying power I've found in a pencil is in Prestige Waterproof Black eye pencil (kind you sharpen yourself!), but the Prestige is not nearly as stark a black, and it doesn't glide on as easily as Zero. However, the Prestige waterproof does stay put even better than Zero. I recently tried Prestige's NEW "Total Intensity" deepest black and OMG what a mistake! It was stark black and stayed put, BUT...it made my eyes sting, they became swollen, and teared uncontrollably for over 24 hrs, despite taking Benedril! I tried it twice -- that's how crazy I am about black eye liner! lol So, for now, Urban Decay's ZERO is going to be my staple black waterproof eye liner pencil, with Prestige Waterproof as my 2nd choice. Other stark black pencils I love are MAC Feline and MAC Smolder -- but NEITHER one has good staying power. To save money, lol, I often will line first with Prestige Waterproof black pencil (for staying power), and then go over the line with MAC Feline or Smolder. For special occasions, I'll splurge and use my Urban Decay ZERO. Note to Urban Decay: LOWER your prices! $17 for an eye pencil, which gets used up after a few sharpenings, is way too pricey!! If you lowered your prices, I'd buy Zero by the CASE! haha :) ...seriously, though, I would!! :)
LOOOOVE! I could sing its praises all day. Zero is an awesome black liner. I always had the problem of my eyeliners not staying on my waterline or they crease in the find lines under my lower lashes, OR..they migrate to the inner/outer corners. Currently this is the black pencil liner I grab for. I have others, but I know I can count on this one to do exactly what it claims and what I need it to do. I put this on and allow it to set for several seconds and once set...not going anywhere. I also like that if I wear it on the lash line and want a more smudged out effect, I have several seconds to do so...and then...again, not going anywhere. Love love love this liner. Its also a nice deep rich black. I don't love the price tag so much, but until I can find another pencil for a cheaper price that does the same job....I'll be repurchasing this. NOTE: It is very VERY soft, which is a pro and a con....good because it goes on so easy without any tugging, but a con because when you go to sharpen it, you lose a lot of product.
-blackest black I have ever seen
-best pigmentation out there.
-smears like crazy, you will look like a raccoon in 10 seconds just from blinking.
-did I forget to mention expensive?
IMO, stick with a DS eyeliner. Best ones to try: Prestige Total Intensity, Revlon Colorstay, and Almay Intense.
