I really wanted to like this mascara but it smudges which was a huge disappoint for me. On all other things it does pretty well, good volume and curl. Also leaves my lashes feeling soft instead of stiff like others have done.
After reading and reading reviews I bought, yet again, another mascara because of curiosity. Lord knows I have about 4 at home right now and I didn't need another one. I was at Target last night I just couldn't pass this up. I always choose waterproof mascaras because I find they hold the curl that I work so hard for. The non WP ones tend to make them straighten out. Very painful experience having your eyes fabulous and then ruined with a mascara. But I digress. THIS mascara is so so very nice. It really made them full, long, black and just plain beautiful. I had thought that CG Exact Lash WP was my HG. I would try others, but return to it. Then I found that MF Volume couture WP was exactly the same for me so I would use either or. Now comparing this to those two I see a difference. I would say that the MF and the CG are both "crunchier." I think they have more shine too, which is the only thing they have over F&S. What F&S does for me that is better is it lenthens more, helps the curl curl MORE, thickens a touch and fans the lashes out. It results in a very doll like lash look and more dramatic for me than my old HG's. I haven't had clumping issues and I put on two coats.
I know these are all DS mascaras I am discussing here. I would like to say that I have tried mutliple HE mascaras that I just didn't like. MAC, Lancome, UD you name it. I would eventually like to try the Doirshow and have that on my list to sample. If it can go even more dramatic than F&S I will add on to my collection!
I really liked this mascara, except for the smudging factor. I would have a little smudge under my eyes after coming back from school. It does hold a curl relatively well and really does make my lashes full and soft. Good for a natural, pretty lash look.
After reading the excellent reviews of this mascara I rushed out to buy it. Unfortunately this wasn't as waterproof as I wanted. I applied this in the morning and after about 6 hours this had smudged terribly under my eyes. I have never had a waterproof mascara do this to me! On the plus side, it made my lashes look long and thick, without looking too fake. It kept a curl and was easy to remove. But it just doesn't perform in hot weather. And living in South Florida means that I need heavy-duty makeup. I also hated the brush. I am so used to the smaller brush that CGs Lash Exact comes with, that this bulky bristly brush just didn't perform as well. I will continue to use this tube up but I won't purchase again.
I bought this in Very Black. I love how it goes on, very smoothly, easy to apply, MUCH better than the clumpy Unstoppable. I love how it makes my lashes look. However, within 4 hours, I have raccoon eyes. That is a HUGE minus for me. I have found that a mascara by Wet n Wild lasts longer than this. The raccoon eyes is the only reason I took any lippies off, otherwise it would be HG material. I wont buy again...thank God I bought it on sale and with a coupon so it was only $3.
I use this mascara as a base coat for my Fresh supernova mascara. Since it's waterproof and light, it holds my curl perfectly. I use the mascara alone on weekends when I don't tend to wear a lot of makeup. It gives a great natural look and way cheaper than Clinique's long and pretty mascara.
UPDATE (05/2010): being now in a country where I can get my grubby little hands on this again, I bought some. It's still lovely. UPDATE (01/2011): tried out some more mascaras last year, F&S still stands strong as favourite. If I could give 6 lippies to just one product, this would be The One.
[Back to my original review...] The best mascara I have ever used. I have used many mascaras: been wearing them for over twenty years, am a redhead with light lashes, of a sensitive disposition, so generally A Bit Fussy.
The Full does what it says on the tin. Easy to apply, nice plushy brush (but without being too thick), tube lasts at least 4 weeks before drying out, produces lovely lush feathery supple lashes, which stay that way all day. I used this for several years (with the odd break to see if anything better did indeed exist, usually followed by returns to this). Best w/p I've met for feel, finish, and niceness to lashes: best of the traditional w/p ones, and equal to the nicest tubing mascaras.
Available in black and a pleasant brown, suitable for the lighter-lashed among us.
Better than the non-WP version, leaving lashes just as lush, but plus no smudges and, well, the waterproof business. And F&S is truly, properly waterproof. Survives rain, snow, swimming, water-sports, the shower, being left on overnight post-party, and indeed longer: personal record of 72 hours (with one touch-up) when travelling or camping. Needs to be removed with oil. No lash loss here (but I am careful and thorough in removal).
Maybelline currently has a moratorium on animal testing, but their parent company and some other of its subsidiaries don't. Shops in the US don't always carry the brown, but it's easy to find online (and bargainaceous either way).
The Waterproof version is very good, and a true waterproof that is mainly wax but - as is often the case with waterproofs - dries out faster than the non-waterproof version. Having said that, it does still last my personal acceptable minimum of 6 weeks. Used daily, I'll have 3 months' smooth wear out of it.
CON: ISSUES OF AVAILABILITY. It's hard to find in Canada, as the main drugstores don't carry it (only whatever the newest Maybelline cr*p releases are, sigh). Some Save-on-Foods have it, though, and it's available online. I stopped using the Full Waterproof from early 2007 through to summer 2009, due to living in Ireland where this beloved delight is unavailable. I've rarely seen it in the UK. Unavailable elsewhere in Europe. I couldn't find it in any online stores that ship to Ireland.*
But my tragic deprivation was a good excuse to try out lots of other mascaras: F&S w/p was a very useful standard against which to compare all other mascaras. Given how many other mascaras I've played around with and still come back to the F&S, that's some indication of what a Gold Standard it is.
Costs around CAD5.00-9.00 depending on sales being on and suchlike. Similar price in the US. Worth every penny.

* I emailed Maybelline about this, asking why it wasn't available, mentioning that the F&S (both versions) has rave reviews here on MUA, making comparisons to The Pink Tube Crap (which is very much available here in Europe, and not cheap - the same price as Mabelline's other cheaper mascaras, like EUR 7.50 or so - that's about USD 12.00!!!), and wondering what their marketing and research departments were doing seeing as how they clearly weren't monitoring the actual opinions of actual users. I did eventually get these "replies":
"Thank you for taking the time to contact us concerning the Discontinued Full and Soft mascara, your comments will be passed to our Marketing Department in this respect.
Please do not hesitate to contact us should you require any further advice or assistance concerning our products through one of the channels below."
"Thank you for your recent e-mail. We are sorry to inform you that we no longer manufacture and distribute this particular product in the UK. However if you require further assistance please find enclosed the Consumer Advisory details for the US and Canada who will assist you further on any query you have with Maybelline Full and Soft Mascara."
Nearly made me boycott Maybelline for ever. continued >>
This is great for a drug store brand. I actually like this better than Lancome's Definicils! I didn't have any problems with Full N Soft clumping or making my eyelashes feel dry and brittle as I did with the Lancome waterproof mascara. I didn't give this product a "5" rating b/c it doesn't curl lashes. But I suppose this product was formulated for volume, not curl. The waterproof was fine too, no smudges or streaks from the rain. I will definitely purchase again.
If it is not hot and humid out, this is the best mascara ever....for the first three weeks. Then it gets clumpy and not as...soft and glossy. After the three weeks it starts to smudge. and if it is hot and humid out forget about it holding a curl. Although it holds a curl really well if you live in a dry climate.
The search continues.
I'm asian with fairly long but also very -straight- lashes. I have sensitive eyes due to allergies, occasionally wear contacts for cosmetic reasons, combination skin. I need waterproof mascara almost always just to avoid smudging since my bad allergies prone watery eyes too often. I also need a mascara that holds a curl. I usually curl before applying but that ruins the point with most mascaras and curling afterwards often leads to "bent" lashes.
Full n Soft WP gives a decent volume + length. The great thing about this macara is that "piling" doesn't cause clumping/spider lashes so if you're someone who likes to coat a lot or reapply during the day, this is your new best friend! Your lashes are left soft like it says and doesn't feel too hard/geled back like some mascaras...
This macara probably would be amazing over a fibrewig primer. I haven't tested this out yet! =)
This formula isn't very "waterproof" though. Beware, if it gets on your lids/skin it's a pain to get out... thats the only time when this does seem water proof! however on the lashes it's moderately waterproof but does have a chance of "smudging" occasionally due to heat/overly watery eyes or what not.. So I'm taking one lippy off for that.. It's not that bad because this washes out quite easily with me with a cleanser unlike other WP mascaras that need an oily remover.. but it just isn't waterproof like it says. For a d/s mascara it's still quite nice and I might repurchase =).
