After reading the reviews here I had to try this product. As this is not available in Australia - I bought if off ebay. Total cost about $20. I do not have any problems with breakouts or anything like that (I wash very thoroughly - Cetaphil, cleansing oil, cleansing foam) but one thing I have noticed using it for the past 4 days is that it is very drying. I mean, it works, leaves smooth base - nice and matt. Price is fantastic but lately my skin is looking so dry and horrible... I have no option but to use my MAC Prep + Prime. It is more than twice the price (it is $40 in Australia!!) and MAC does not cover as well but hey, it doesn't leave me looking like a tortoise. Man alive. Better get on the aspirin mask on to fix this horrible flakey skin!!
Hope this helps someone decide whether to use it or not. It is so cheap I can't imagine why you wouldn't try it to be honest - but why is it leaving me look like Barbara Cartland?? Scary.
UPDATE: Kept trying because when you first put it on, it does look pretty good - filling in any nasty lines etc. But then, usually a few hours after, I see lots more fine lines than I usually see. This is incredibly depressing!! I am spotting a few more pimples so I have decided to not use any primers for a few days to see if that helps. I hope it will!!
This stuff is the best!!!!! I thought I had tried all of the MUA secret products....I adore the aspirin mask, yogurt mask, use ACV on my face and hair, and Milk of Magnesia to control oil. Then this popped up in "recently reviewed" and I was very curious indeed. So it was a cheaper alternative to Smashbox...eh? I go through foundation and primer pretty fast so I really can't afford very high end face products. Thus I decided to give this baby a try, and boy was I impressed! It goes on like butter (causing zero oiliness and breakouts), and helps my foundation stay for hours. You have to give this a try if you are in the market for a cheap primer! 5 stars from me!
I never expected to be reviewing a Monistat product on MUA, but now I have found it, I think everyone should know about it! I have never used a primer under makeup before, so I don't have anything to compare this to. Firstly, the packaging. This product is in a squeezy tube with "Monistat" all over it. A bit strange to use at first, but the performance of this far outweighs this small disadvantage. The tube is great, hygienic and doesn't make a mess in your makeup bag. The gel itself is slippery-feeling but goes on really silkily. I applied this for a few days with a sponge and got mediocre results, but now I am applying it with my fingers I can see a big difference. The trick I found was to leave this to sink in for a minute or two after application. Applying makeup straight after applying this makes no difference at all to the performance or look of the makeup. But waiting a couple of minutes made my foundation and concealer look flawless, go on smoothly (even over my fine lines!) and STAY ALL DAY. I bought a foundation from Revlon that I actually thought was a waste of money before I wore it with primer underneath. Monistat turned this from a waste to one of my favorite foundations. And makeup really does last all day. Even in hot humid weather this makes your face stay flawless. It never feels greasy or sticky, and you can't even feel that you're wearing it. I never broke out from this (a miracle in itself) and it also works wonders on making my eyeshadow stay put. Overall, if you can get over applying a Monistat product to your face, this is the ultimate product I would recommend. continued >>
I had been using the Smashbox primers, cringing everytime I repurchased. A HUGE thank you to the wonderful ladies here at MUA for pointing me to this dirt cheap product as an alternative. I started using this about 6 weeks ago on a daily basis. It works beautifully, and, IMO, even better than the overpriced Smashbox product. I apply my moisturizer (regular Oil of Olay) first, followed by monistat. Not only does it, to my delight, minmize my large pores around my nose, it also mattifies my face, creating a nice smooth base for my foundation (Revlon's ColorStay). It's around $5 and can be found at Walmart in the feminine hygiene products section. I'm going to stock up on this one, it's a keeper.
UPDATE -- This stuff is still working! Found it at both Walgreens and Walmart.
I really only use this as a primer for loose eyeshadow. It really works. I don't have sparklies all over my face anymore! If you have trouble finding it, look in the feminine creams section, that's where it usually is. Try this before spending more money on other primers.
This is my first primer ever and it did the work what it suppose to do. Its silky smooth and cheap as compare to smash box photo finish. I am going to buy it again for sure.
I love this stuff! I read some reviews for it on Total Beauty, and ran to Target to pick some up. I don't have acne prone skin or anything, so I haven't really noticed a problem with breaking out or clogged pores, etc, and I've been using it for around 3 months in the Spring/Summer season. I find that it does diminish the appearance of my pores, although I'm sure I'm the only one in the universe who would notice. Anyway, it makes my skin matte, feels awesome, works like a charm. Very happy with it!
I might have avoided problems with this because I only use a TINY amount. (Don't try to spackle your pores with this, leave it on overnight, and then get mad when they clog! I mean, really, ladies. Come on.) I use way less than a pea sized dot for my entire face, and it still mattifies and controls oil for me.
I bought this to try as a makeup primer. When I first felt it, I was impressed with how smooth it feels. I tried it under my makeup and it looked great! But, it quickly turned my face into an oil slick. I tried it again the next day and it did the same thing.
This stuff is the bomb. It smooths everything out and helps my makeup stay. I had issues with shine around my nose, but since I started using this under foundation, the oiliness has diminished significantly.
As others have mentioned, it works really well for those of us with rosacea. My skin can get pretty dry and itchy, and this seems to keep my moisurizer "locked in."
I do agree that it can cause break-outs if not washed off properly...in fact, I may be in the market for another cleanser, as I do not think it is taking everything off.
Since I started using it I have noticed a little more pore-clogging, but I had issues with that anyway. And frankly, I wear foundation so infrequently anymore I don't think it will hurt to use this product when I do.
Last week was an exception as I was wearing base every day, and not washing my makeup off religiously at night. Bad girl.
I hope this continues to work, as it makes a huge difference in the appearance of my skin.
EDIT 7/30: DRAT...major breakouts, even with limited use and thorough washing after wearing. Too bad....it really works, otherwise.
The same formulation as Smashbox Phto Finish, I found out about this from another makeup artist friend of mine who is in the film industry and has been using for years.
I love it... works amazing on just about any type of skin and leaves it a smooth, matte, flawless base for foundation.
