This review covers 4 shades of the E.L.F. HD Blushes; Superstar, Diva, Encore and Showstopper.
As a reference, I'm NC40, which is a tricky tone. I need pigmented blushes, but natural looking shades. This can be a tricky combination. Not enough pigment washes me out and makes my complexion look dull. Too much pigment looks wrong as well. You might think that too much pigment just needs to be blended down, but there is not enough blending in the world to take some shades down. I also have to be careful with these because they have to be carefully applied and I don't always have time for all that.
The ELF HD blushes seem to be just right. The colors are vibrant and very well pigmented and the dispenser provides just enough product to make a healthy looking blush. Wow. The only shade I will be passing on is Showstopper, which is a very very vibrant berry, extremely intense. It will look just right on on my NC50 friend.
You cannot beat the quality and thought put into these for the price point. The formulation applies very smoothly, the packaging is clean and compact and best of all dispenses just what you need without worry of introducing germs and bacteria into the bottle. Huge yay.
I've purchased this on 'Superstar' color which claims to be orange with a little bit pink. i was afraid that it worn out really fast. But surprising enough, it does last all day. To make it clearer, my place rains cat and dog this season, yet this blush sticks on my cheek like 90% even when my whole face is wet! Looks natural! no frangance!
A surprise from ELF, it's a very cute little blush that comes with a pump, and it's EXTREMELY pigmented. This needs to be used with caution! I also ordered the small stippling blush and that seemed to help blend it out nicely on my cheeks. You only need a tiny dot to create a nice effect. Feels like light mousse texture, and has a glow. Great value!
Lovely product! Looks and feel so high quality but is not crazy expensive. I have two shades of this and love it! It's VERY pigmented so you don't even need a full pump. The pump is easily controlled so you can get whatever amount you want out of it. Love this!
I purchased all five of these when I saw them on the ELF website. I had a 50% off coupon so they ended up being $1.50 each. I've got neutral nc/nw 20 - 25 skin and if I am careful about how I apply, I can get them all to work for me. The packaging is nice, sleek and black, though I agree with other reviews I've read that only the barest touch on the pump will give you more than you need for both cheeks. Nevermind an entire pump of the product, you could coat your entire face with it. The consistency is smooth, reminds me a bit of a primer, which makes sense as the product does have a fair few silicones in it. There is no scent that I can detect. The product is crrrraazy pigmented. To apply I put the tiniest dot on the back of my hand, spread it out on the back of my hand with my finger, and then using a smallish (elf) stipple brush I barely tap the brush into the product and apply to my cheeks. I've found the smearing onto the back of my hand and *then* patting my brush in is essential to get an even wash. I have had horrible luck with applying them directly to my face, they splotch and patch and refuse to blend out well. If I need to blend out the edges on my face I use a dry/clean stipple brush and as long as my face in moisturized (I apply over a TM) and I work quickly they blend beautifully. The feel on the skin is so light I don't even know it's there. The wear on my normal/combo skin is epic. It's always lasted 12+ hours until I take my makeup off. I like the colors, they're flattering and when applied properly I think they're very wearable. I would repurchase, though I expect I'll never have to, I think these will last forever. If ELF comes out with new colors I'll be snapping them up. EDIT: I've done my best to take pictures with my mobile of some swatches both concentrated and blended out, of the different colors. The names are in teeny tiny pink writing at the top of the picture...because I'm unfamiliar with the program I have to edit photos. At any rate, hope they are of some help.
1. crazy good pigmentation. This is both a pro and a con. Pro because obviously you want a product to be pigmented, and especially something coming form ELF. A con because it's so pigmented that you have to sheer it out a lot and essentially waste the product. I squirted the tiniest dot on the back of my hand and used a small stippling brush to sheer it out. I basically wiped my brush almost clean and then applied to my cheeks since I didn't want to go to work looking like I joined the circus.
2. bad packaging. Since this is so pigmented and you have to use so little product, the packaging is not conducive to dispensing a small amount. Even if you try to push the pump the slightest bit, you still get too much product. Also, the first time I pumped each of the 3 colors I bought, oil came out and got all over the tube.
3. poor color choices. Don't get me wrong, the colors are beautiful, but just not as blush. Again, since they are so pigmented, they would only look good on darker skintones IMO. I'd like to see some nude, peach or light pink colors.
4. didn't blend well. I had a hard time blending these onto my primed skin. I wear powder foundation and wore this underneath my powder, right on top of my primer. It blended out OK, but ended up looking very patchy. I tried to even it out with powder blush afterwards, but that kind of defeats the purpose of the product, right?
I did try using this as a lip color and it worked quite well. If anything, I'll keep using them as a lip stain rather than a blush.
I am too cheap to buy the MUFE version, but here are my thoughts on the ELF blushes. I think they have almost exactly the same issues that the MUFE blushes have, according to the reviews I read on the MUFE product. They are crazy pigmented. I have been wearing makeup for 30 years, and these have a huge learning curve! The pump seems to me like it has the same issue that people were concerned with in regards to the MUFE product...one pump will pump out WAAAYYYY too much product. You only need the tiniest bead of product for each cheek, and then it's still too much sometimes. I can work with the two lightest colors pretty easily, but the three darkest I have been experimenting with wearing under my foundation, since it is so hard to apply these subtle-y. This seems to work pretty well. I have also found that they make excellent lip stains. So far my favorites are the two lightest colors, which are a slightly mauvey pink (Headliner) and a warmer peachy pink (Superstar), and the darkest berry colored one (Showstopper), which has actually been applying much like a stain, and looks particularly like a natural blush when applied under my foundation. Other than the pump issue, I have no complaints with the packaging, and I think $1.50 each was a great price. Wear time seems to only be about 4 hours though. I only gave these 4 lipsticks because they aren't that easy to use, but otherwise, I'm not unhappy with my purchase.
3-19-13...Editing to add that I almost never use these anymore....they are just too much work!
