Like a lot of people, I'm always on the search for the perfect pure red. Some are too blue, some are too orange. I have red hair so I have to be really careful on color. This is a must have. It is the perfect pin up red. It looks amazing with an understated eye or with a heavy eye for a dramatic look.
HG Red lippy for me!! Russian Red will suit anyone's skintone imo. I'm NC40 and it looks great on me!! I RIS and by far this is my new favorite red lipstick!!!
My first mac lipstick (: compliments my skintone well nc 25-30. Packaging is a very classy black tube. I can't comment on the price because I got it through the 6 container turn in program. I don't wear it much mostly going out at nite because I feel its a little too much for daytime, so the tube should last me a while, would repurchase when I do run out (:
Bloody love the lasting power of this lippy.
This is the first red I've bought (I had one of Mum's old ones but it is too blue) and I did so based on the reviews here. I don't know if its just a combination of how self-conscious I am and my lack of experience with red lippies but there is something about the colour that doesn't feel quite right. I think it is just a fraction too dark for me - I'm paranoid about it making my lips look thinner, and thats the last thing they need. When I wear it I use a pink liner underneath to brighten it up a bit. TBH though, I think its just my vanity making me worry.
I love everything else about this though - the smell ( a good reminder that I'm actually wearing something on my lips because I usually wear such a thin layer), the lasting power without reapplying and the texture.
In spite of my concerns about whether the colour suits me, I think I would buy it again.
EDIT: I won't buy this again. Its just too dark. I think I'm really looking for something that will give me the bright, retro look. This just doesn't hit the spot. I've gotten over my worries about whether or not I can wear red lips; I bought Rimmel's Colour Show Off in Red Fever and its damn near perfect - sadly it doesn't have the staying power of RR. I'm also not so sure about the blue-based thing anymore since Red Fever definitely has an orange hue. I've been reading so many rave reviews about Mac's Lady Danger, which is orange based, from fair skinned girls. That might be my next investment.
This is a classic red lipstick with a blue undertone. When I recieved this, I was quite pleased with it. What more can I say about a classic red. This lipstick is matte. Also, this color will look great on any skintone since I am a freelance MUA. When applied correctly, one does not need ot continue to reapply.
I would repurchase this product.
Russian Red packs a punch in colour whilst also being a bit darker in personality than other phone box-style reds I have tried. It creates a very clear and very classic red lip. The pigment is fairly high. It is part of the Matte line of lipsticks. When Diane Kruger wore it in Inglourious B*stards and on the promotional trail of the film it was clear she was wearing Russian Red. Dita Von Teese has often worn the colour too. I do find the colour quite cold though, possible due to the intensity and amount of blue used to create the red, which makes it appear very block colour.
However, MAC lipsticks are not for everybody despite their popularity and I actually do not use them so much anymore now I have Illamasqua. This is because MAC's lipstick formula is very drying. Be it a Matte, Satin, Lustre or Glaze they dehydrate my lips and it is very uncomfortable.
For those who do not get on with MAC lipsticks for this reason but love this colour I recommend Illamasqua's lipstick in Faust and Maneater. They are both matte finishes and are clear reds but are warm and not block-y or cold. What I love about the many Illamasqua shades I have tried and own is that although they are intensely pigmented and sometimes out-of-this-world colours they sit so naturally on the lip and do not scream "I'm wearing lipstick" but instead integrate as a part of your look.
The formula does not dry out my lips either. I turn to these Illamasqua nowadays due to this formula and the colours in their range (I can have black or lilac whenever I like and not pine for another LE collection/rock up on eBay and buy for amped up prices!), but to MAC lipstick loyalists Russian Red is a great shade for many skin tones.
Everyone needs to own this lipstick! It is so bright and fun, but still stays classy and elegant. Red lipsticks are tricky, but I find that this bright shade really lifts the face and makes your skin glow. Highley recommended! ;)
I exchanged my MAC empties today for this lipstick, and I just adore it! I'm not a big lipstick person normally and red isn't a colour I can wear regularly because I wear a lot of black eyeliner and I think dark, bold eyes and a red lip is a bit much for most occassions. But I did want to find the perfect classic red lipstick for when the occassions do arise, and this is it. It's a really gorgeous, true, classic, classy red that really can likely be worn by just about any skin tone. I'm extremely pale and I find that most red lipsticks come out orangey on me and make me look like a clown, but not Russian Red. It comes out looking the same as it does in the tube. Beautiful true red colour, tons of pigment and a really nice finish, fairly comfortable wear (it's definitely not moisturizing, and I don't think it'd be as long wearing if it was, but I don't think it's drying in itself either), very long-wearing (I tried applying it from the stick and then smudging it around to make it more sheer, and it's VERY hard to budge once on the lips), and extremely minimal transfer to other skin, etc., all make this the perfect red lipstick. This is probably the one product that I've received through Back To MAC that I'd actually consider repurchasing at regular price, when I ever run out (though that might not be for a while, because like I said, I don't wear red lipstick often). I actually last traded my empties for the Russian Red gloss, which I wasn't quite as happy with as it seemed a bit brighter on my lips, but it might be nice as well for someone that can wear a slightly cooler red (I can generally only wear it either very sheer, over another darker colour, or perhaps in a darker setting so that it's a bit more muted). But if you're looking for the perfect red lipstick for just about any skin tone, I highly recommend MAC Russian Red!
I love mac lipstick but to be honest....this shade on every Asian kinda makes them look like a geisha...not the good kind of geisha. Every time i go into MAC, there's someone trying this on and It goes really well with people with pale to fair skin, not so much for tan skin. I would go for slightly darker red, not so poppy red. Everything else about this lipstick is very good tho!!! I just wouldn't repurchase the same color.
When I came into MAC, I wanted to get a good red lipstick. Every girl needs a good red lipstick, right? So I asked for their best, and they gave me a choice between ruby woo and russian red. When they had no more ruby woo, I went with the russian red.
It is my favorite product I have bought from them! Every time that I wear it, I get insane complements and my confidence is up by ten points. I highly, HIGHLY recommend this product for anyone who is looking for a good red lipstick. Worth every cent.
