this face wash is really cool - from the first time trying it, my skin has been really clear and smooth. my face feels very clean and it is not abrasive or too soapy. i have occasional breakouts along my chin and this has been great along with the drying lotion - or maybe it's the combination ... recently received great samples from mario badescu and am falling in love with their products. definitely worth a try.
I'm in shock. I really did not expect this to work for me. I had tried MB's products about 10 years ago and wasn't impressed. But I'm always on the lookout for a HG cleanser and moisturizer that actually DOES something for my face. So I went ahead and filled out the questionnaire on their website, and they sent me a generous number of samples. I even put off using them for a few weeks because I thought they'd be too drying for me in the winter. But then I bit the bullet and gave this cleanser a shot. I am in LOVE with how my skin looks, and I don't know if I've said that before in my life. (Background on my face: combination skin, oily nose, normal to dry (in winter) cheeks, large pores.) My skin is noticeably clearer after less than 1 week of use. No breakouts, no irritation, and it's not drying for me at all.
I follow this with the Aloe toner and Moisture Magnet from MB during the day, and Dove night cream at night. (I have used other daytime moisturizers and found just as good results, so I feel it's the result of the cleanser.) My face is soft, not shiny, and looks good WITHOUT makeup--a remarkable feat. I'll definitely purchase the full size--it's affordable ($12 for the 8 oz), has a light, pleasant smell, and rinses cleanly. I'm still shocked that this worked so well for me! My advice to anyone considering it would be to definitely get the samples first from mariobadescu.com.
I liked this cleanser at first. Even though I am use to foaming cleansers. It rinses well made my face feel clean. But I broke out after using it. Back to the store it went.
I purchased this after trying the sample I received from filling out a skin profile on the Mario Badescu web site (they are quite generous with product samples that match your profile). I use it following my DHC Deep Cleansing Oil. I do find that it leaves my skin soft and clean-feeling (this leaves NO residue), but I use this judiciously, as it can make my face red and slightly sensitive. It seems to work better for me when my skin is oilier and on the verge of a breakout. I'm now rotating between this and my DHC Mild Cleansing Soap, which is less stripping of my skin's moisture. Overall, the Enzyme Cleansing Gel probably would have been a better option for me a few years ago, when my combination skin was a bit oilier. I may try a less drying product on my next Mario Badescu order; however, I would recommend it for younger folks with breakout prone skin that doesn't get dry. UPDATE: Swapped this one with a younger MUAer; it became a bit too drying for my skin.
Nice, all-around facial cleanser. It's a great price $12 for 8 oz. There is a slight scent, but scents don't really bother me. I have oily skin and it seems to do a good job of cleansing my face, although it doesnt take off eye makeup/mascara very well. I have not experienced new breakouts with this product.
I use Retin-A Micro at night and this cleanser is gentle enough to not overdry my face. You only need a pea-sized amount, so 8 oz. should last for a long time. I've started using MB a couple months ago, and still have over half left in the bottle.
- PPP, recently chemically sensitised, over-reactive skin. Otherwise normal-combination with very mild hormonal breakouts.
Enzyme Cleansing Gel by Mario Badescu is a mild gel cleanser. It is non-foaming, and will not lather unless the user over-works the product. Its active ingredient is a mild AHA based on a papaya enzyme, and is suitable to use on oily, oily-normal, normal, and normal-dry skin. It is suitable for those recovering from chemical sensitivity when used in conjunction with a well-planned skincare routine. All Mario Badescu products are unscented and unperfumed.
The Enzyme Cleansing Gel is a pale green gel, stored in a tough squeezy bottle with a decanting flip-top spout.
POINTS OF USE:
- a little goes a long way. A pea-sized amount is sufficient to cleanse the entire face and neck.
- works well; the mild AHA breaks down the bond between dead skin cells and fresh skin without burning or stinging, and cleans without leaving residue or stripping the skin of natrual oils.
- this cleanser effectively and thoroughly removes face make-up. Using it means that you can remove another product from your skincare collection. It isn't suitable to remove eye make-up.
- Toning and moisturising are essential following Enzyme Cleansing Gel. Toning removes any trace amounts of product left - including the active enzyme - whilst moisturising replaces natrual oil and moisture.
Deionized Water (Aqua), Glycerin, Papaya (Carica Papaya Fruit) Extract, Grapefruit (Citrus Grandis Fruit) Extract, Monomide, Triethanolamine, Methylparaben.
Enzyme Cleansing Gel by Mario Badescu is an all-round cleansing product suitable for a majority of skin types. It is an accessable introduction product to the world of AHA-based products, as well as being an effective and mild cleanser.

I started using this when I was trying to wean myself off of Proactiv. I wanted something more gentle and the Enzyme Cleansing Gel was it. It seems to clean better than Cetaphil (removes makeup, no residue) but still feels gentle on my fussy skin. I tend to dry out easily and I have never had a problem with this. I love the fresh scent (one of the reasons I wanted off of Proactiv was the scent). My skin looks great too now and I have used this through post partum hormones, pregnant again hormones, post partum again through nursing hormones and eventually back to the pill hormones. My skin has remained stable and clear (with only the occassional "hormone" pimple).
I have mixed feelings for this cleanser. I like that it doesnt foam or dry my skin out yet leaves it feeling clean. It is also reasonably priced and seems to be quite economical as my bottle still has over a third remaining after using it everyday for the last four months. My skin is quite fussy with cleansers (foaming cleansers irritate while creamy cleansers leave residue and can even sting- hello cetaphil). However, it does sting like a mofo if you get in into your eyes so if like me you are a bit sloppy washing your face in the shower-watch out- this stuff really burns and dries out your eye area. I most likely wouldnt purchase this product again as my skin is less sensitive now i have found a great contraceptive pill which has greatly regulated my hormones) and i think i will be able to go back to my Paula's Choice One Step, which is even cheaper (in australia anyway) and i can use it to remove eyemakeup.
I bought this cleanser about a month ago, when I was searching for a cleanser that would take my makeup off without drying out my skin, and improve the texture and help with my blemishes. It is a good cleanser for taking off makeup and I wear a considerable amount (foundation-loose powder-mascara--eyeshadow--blush(sometimes)). It also did improve the texture of my skin, instead of feeling bumpy it is now smooth, however, going along with the smoothness, it has caused my skin to become dry, after 2 weeks of using. The smell does not get to me however the scent does stay on my hands/fingers and that does bother me. It hasn't helped with my acne, not that I can tell, and as noted before, has caused my skin to become dry. I do like the packaging of the bottle and the color, light green, is nice to look at. (lol). Moreover, I do like the feel of the gel cleanser. It is defineitly not as potent as regular gel cleansers, meaning that it is not overly drying and thick like other gel cleansers. When put on, I feel that it "melts" away the dirt and makeup; a weird feeling that I can't really explain. For a $12 8oz bottle at Nordstroms, you can't beat the price.
Ingredients: Deionized Water (Aqua), Glycerin, Papaya (Carica Papaya Fruit) Extract, Grapefruit (Citrus Grandis Fruit) Extract, Monomide, Triethanolamine, Methylparaben.
Bottom line: I will not repurchase, but I will finish the bottle (it's going to take a long time.. lol). It could be a good summer cleanser but its not a good winter cleanser.
My opinion about this product is quite torn. I don't want to knock it, as I did see some improvement to my skin when I started using it. My skin is sensitive, normnal-combination, and I have some hormonal acne. It has a nice gel texture, that lathers slightly. But I felt like it left some sort of film on my skin, and that my skin was never completely clean after using it. And then there's THAT smell. I've used a lot of products in my time, but the fragrance in this is positively vile. I struggled with it. And to make matters worse, even after rinsing the cleanser off, I could still smell it for a while. That was a big draw back. And then a couple of months into using it, my skin started to react and burn. I'd stop using it for a few days, and my skin would be fine. It happened a few times. So there's definitely something nasty in it that doesnt like my skin.
