I have since gone back to high-end cleansers, but this is among the best of all drugstore cleansers, as it's non-irritating. I only use the fragrance-free version. The problem is it takes several pumps to clean my face at night. Like previous reviewer said, it takes several tries to get rid of dirt and oil, and more splashes to rinse my face clean. I do feel a slight film after washing. Product could also be foamier. This does not remove tough grime or sunscreen well, but it is a good mild cleanser to have around on some mornings, or for use following makeup remover. I like the pump but wish it came in a tube for travel.
For now, I'm going back to Shiseido's foaming cleansers.
Neutrogena products have made my skin improve dramatically within the last 6 months. I though I would give this a try as I was looking for a foaming cleanser (and it was cheap) from Neutrogena. Unfortunately this dried my skin so badly that I had to stop using it on my face after two washes. I didn't like the film that it left on my skin - it just wouldn't go away no matter how many times I rinsed my skin with water. I felt that it didn't foam as much as I thought it should, I had to use several pumps of this product to make my skin feel clean. I thought that maybe it was because I have sensitive skin that I reacted this way, but I switched to using this as a body wash (to not waste any) with the same results - skin dried out and itchy. Not one I will purchase again.
This is my high god of face washes out there. It is WONDERFUL. It is gentle and works like magic to even remove waterproof makeup. It is great. Despite being gentle, it can dry your skin out just a tad. That would be the only downside of it. I have been using this for a few months and will continue to buy it until they (No! Never!) discontinue it.
It's a nice basic cleanser. The smell is not pleasant, but it goes away in three seconds after you slather it on your face. Skin feels soft and clean but not too dry afterwards, even for my dry skin. It should be fine as long as you tone and moisturize immediately after use (like you're supposed to anyways). I just wish it didn't require so many splashes of water to rinse off, so one lippie off for that. Will most likely repurchase because it's basic, cheap, works, suits most skintype, and available everywhere.UPDATE 11/22/06: Stashed this in the closet because it's too drying for this harsh winter, will definitely use it again as soon as weather gets warmer. For now, Neutrogena's Extra Gentle Cleanser is my regular day/night cleanser. continued >>
I'm using this product from time to time when ever i stay over at my bf's house (he uses this stuff). i think overall its a good cleanser. its simple and i like the fact that its fragrance free. for some reason i love the smell of it..?? anyways, my area where i live this product comes in a tube that you can squeeze it out, which is a plus (the pump bottle wouldnt be travel-friendly). it cleans well but not as squeaky clean as their facial bar. this one is more mild and gentle. it doesnt dry my skin out either.i think i'll be using this on and off along with the facial bar. i'll only use this when i'm traveling.
I agree with Kerryshka2 below... I don't believe in investing in expensive cleansers for the simple reason that cleansers should just focus on cleansing and let the other skincare products take care of the rest. this stuff does just that - it cleans super well yet it doesn't strip. I admit the clinical-smelling perfume is very strong but it has never bothered me nor irritated my skin. The pump dispenser is so convenient, and one bottle can last a lifetime. And it's so dirt cheap! Won't settle for anything else anytime soon.
Great no-frills product for oily/combination skin. It dries my face out a little during the winter months, but moisturizer fixes that. It's one of the only facial cleansers that doesn't make me break out. Don't get the fragrance one however, it will seem like you just dumped a bottle of perfume on your face.
I mainly bought this b/c its fragrance-free. I'd had enough of that perfumy stuff ex-biore, etc. This does a great job of removing makeup. However, it leaves my skin dry like most other cleansers. It gives my face the clean feeling of using a glycerin bar but in a nice pump dispenser. Very happy with the purchase so far.
The only thing that i can say about the entire neutrogena is that it overall is OK Thats it. I have tried just about every type of cleaser that they market and none of them will help you acheive clear EVEN TONE SKIN. For me it was overdrying and that is not what you need if your trying to get great skin. I have combo skin so maybe its just me.
I bought 2 huge bottles of this at costco for $10. It does a really good job cleaning my skin and removing all traces of makeup without leaving my skin overly dry or tight. Since cleanser is only on the skin for a brief period of time, it makes no sense to me to spend a lot of money on a cleanser with a lot of bells and whistles. I spend my money on good moisturizers and treatments and rely on this lovely mild cleanser for washing my face every day.
