I'm on the fence about re-buying this product. I like how it's a natural sunscreen, formulated for sensitive skin. I haven't experienced any breakouts with it and the neutral scent doesn't bother me much. But, the sunscreen is VERY thick and quite difficult to spread, even if I prep my skin with lotion first. Also, it leaves a slick sheen on my skin even an hour after application. I definitely not recommend this product for your face.

I was previously been using elta md spf 41 (the tinted physical) for my face and neck, and Vanicream on my body, and on my toddler daughter. On top of becoming increasingly sensitive to chemical ingredients, I noticed that my face was getting really dry and dehydrated, which was made worse by the elta md. I decided to try the vanicream on my face. Even on my Latina skin, the sunscreen really was less apparent than the tinted Elta. I did not experience any adverse reactions. No breakouts, clogged pores and rashes. While it felt a little thick, my skin now feels hydrated. I am now using up the elta md on my arms and legs and putting Vanicream on my face. Bonus is that the price is great for a fairly large tube. Love it!

A thoughtful MUAer included the ingredient list. I've been searching, searching, searching for a truly sensitive skin sunscreen. If they have zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, they also have fragrance and coloring and so on and so on. I think this may be the HG. Someone else said that this may actually be helping their skin look better and I have to agree. You know how you put zinc oxide on raw skin? Kind of the same thing. It is hard to find - you'll probably have to order it from the company. And it is thick but it's pretty great if you have rosacea and the meds make you peel.

I used this SS on the fourth of July and did not get burned at all. I have sensitive, reactive skin (use tretinoin and BHA daily) and have had a lot of bad reactions to sunscreens. This SS was not too drying on me, but next time I will wear a moisturizer underneath because i was ever so slightly dry, but nothing really bothersome. Again, my skin is very prone to dryness because of the treatments I use so if you have normal skin you will be fine and this SS won't be drying at all.
The greasiness of this SS did scare me at first, but it is not too hard to spread as some others have mentioned. I found after a half hour the greasiness kind of sinks in and gives a "glow" to the skin. Not whitening in the least. I used some powder on top to settle the greasiness a tad.
Overall, I would probably give a 4.5 rating because of the greasiness factor, but this is definitely my go to SS unless I find something better.
EDIT (7/6/11): I have found MD Solar Sciences Untinted Gel spf 30 this summer and like it much more than Vanicream. Vanicream is great for the body but too greasy for the face, imo.

I'm an obsessive sunscreen user, and appreciate that vanicream offers great protection without parabens and other "bad" things. For me, it had a greasy feeling and didnt spread as well as I like. All in all, its great for sensitive skin, allergies, post op/treatment.

On days when I garden or do outdoor exercise, I use this sunscreen as opposed to philosophy shelter for other days (mainly under makeup). It is non-irritating to me and it is basically a good physical sunscreen. It does go on thick, and I try to warm it by placing the tube in a sink of warm water during cold weather. I find that if I use a small amount and spread it like a lotion, this cream will cover more easily. It is a bit thick and a little oily, but hey, it is physical sunscreen. I was out gardening for two hours once in summer sun, and not a bit of sunburn or reaction from this product. It doesn't sweat off. So I will re-purchase it, but the tube is quite sizeable and a good buy.

UPDATE: used again 01/2010, when skin being reactive. If anything, this soothes it. So it stays in the bathroom for such emergencies... though actually using it a main everyday sunscreen right now.
Excellent simple sunscreen for sensitive skin: in this case, on redhead skin that's photosensitive, and without protection produces hives in under a minute and burns in under five. I've used this in the mainland US in the summer, in Bermuda, and on the Mediterranean. No reactions and no burning. I.e. it works. For more extreme climates (tropics, Antipodes), I found the SPF 60 version splendid; the 60 is slightly lighter and more fluid than the 30, and I prefer the texture for most purposes.
It's an unfragranced cream, initially quite dense, needs to be rubbed in. Zero whitening on me, the white colour of the cream just melts away immediately, as soon as you start spreading it. Will seem slightly greasy at first, but sinks in after maybe 10 minutes - so apply any makeup after that pause. Can be used anywhere on the anatomy.
Also good around the eyes; once it's sunk in, good base for eye makeup (i.e. no creasing). And one of the few sunscreens I've found with no irritation if/when it runs into eyes; others being Vanicream SPF60, Cliniderm SPF45, John Masters Organics SPF30, and Clarins' SPF30 eye cream.
As the 30 is moister, I tend to use it in winter and/or when skin is drier, flaky, being eczematic. Using the 60 from spring to fall, and around the eyes year-round.
Titanium Dioxide 5% + Zinc Oxide 5%. In the Vanicream and Free & Clear ranges, basic no-frills products aimed at very sensitive skin. Available through dermatologists and online.
Cheap for what it is: USD $15-18 for 4 oz / 113 g. Cruelty-free.
