I used to wear Egoiste when in highschool , so I wouldn't smell like all the other girls and because I had good taste, and for some reason it's taken me 18 years to finally get a full sized bottle. Every time I've tried to get my hands on a bottle at Nordies they're always out. So like a sneak I always have to ask for a sample to make it through till the next holiday when Egoiste will be in store for that time ( they said that they only keep it in store for the Holidays or Father's Day). So this Valentines I asked for a bottle from Chanel's website, not taking any chances this time, and was thrilled to open my gift to see this! Egoiste can be deceptive if you just go by looks and name alone. The bottle is pretty plain looking, square plain bottle with a square plain cap with faux wood grain finish, and it doesn't leap off the shelf like Bleu or even it's cousin Platinum with it's fancy pants silver cap. Still though good things are often hidden in plain sight due to their lack of flashiness. The notes in Egoiste are : tangerine, rosewood, coriander, damask rose, sandalwood, vanilla and ambrette seed. I also think there's lavender in there, at least to my nose that's what I've always detected. This starts out very woody with the sandalwood , not fresh shaved like say Fendi Uomo, but still a shaved sandalwood. Then the fruits start to appear but they're not like a fruit bowl but much like, as I've read others say and agree, candied dried fruit. Then at the end of the day it's all about the cinnamon and vanilla. See? Fruit, cinnamon and vanilla! There's nothing to be scared of! lol! I also noticed that people were comparing this to Coco, Egoiste being the male version of Coco, and I love the idea as I'm a huge fan of Coco. It saddens me that this fragrance has become so hard to find outside of the internet. I hope and pray that it won't disappear from the US market or at all. There needs to be a Egoiste revival! And the name? Yes, it's a hard pill to swallow but I'm willing to do it anyway though if it were up to me I'd have named it something else. "What are you wearing?" "Oh, just Selfish by Chanel.". And also now that I know what the name means I finally get the ad with all the screaming women in the windows. Again if you like the original Coco or any heavier orientals a la the '80's then you must get your hands on a bottle of Egoiste. I can assure you it's not worn by many people all over the place and you can have your little scent secret all, or mostly, to yourself while out and about. Lovelovelovelovelove!!!

My sister and i have always said that this fragrance is what a "successful man" would smell like. It's strong without being over powering, masculine and quite unusual in it's scent. This fragrance would definitely be one to purchase for one's boyfriend/husband! I'm absolutely addicted to this smell :)

Notes: rosewood, coriander; Bulgarian rose, carnation, cinnamon; sandalwood, vanilla and ambrette seeds.
This fragrance opens with a (rose)wood note accentuated by spices and a smoke. The accord is dark, rich and very masculine. Above the dark smoky base I detect a light floral mist of rose and carnation. As these notes have burned off I smell the drown comprised of sandalwood and aromatic vanilla. Lasts for six hours on my skin.

I was looking for a sweet men's fragrance for myself (a woman). I tried this and just couldn't get beyond smelling green olive (?!). And for a very long time that's all I could smell (almost taste). Too weird. The dry down reminded me of Gucci Eau de Perfume I, which I don't like. I probably made the mistake of spraying it twice on my wrist. Too strong!

This is amazing stuff - I think it may become a HG. On me this smells like sheer leather, not black jacket leather, but old warn in sun warmed saddles, dusty hay, and the floral tones of wildflower honey stripped bare of the sugared sweetness. There is more, too, a spare slightly sweet aroma of fruit - like the way baskets full of crisp apples smell. It is sheer and full of life but not cloying - totally mesmerizing!!

This is a gorgeous composition, but to me it smells quite feminine. Men's fragrances normally turn sweet with my chemistry, and it's especially true for Egoiste. To my nose, it's a smoky version of No. 18 from Chanel's Les Exclusifs line. (And Sean John's Unforgivable Woman reminds me a lot of No. 18, oddly enough.) In the first few minutes, it has a sweet chemical aspect to it, bordering on plasticky. After that, it's mainly campfire or fireplace smoke with light cinnamon, mild vanilla, gentle flowers, and a tiny bit of strawberry. It reminds me of the color pink or mauve -- a dusty rose color. It's an innocent, comforting, elegant scent with a mellow vibe that reminds me more of the country than the city.

I would love to buy this again, if only I could track it down. What happened to Egoiste? I've been looking for years, but can only find the VERY different Egoiste Platinum.
In any case, this was a lovely gender-neutral fragrance, especially for fall. It has been years since I've seen it, but I recall it smelling of sandalwood, leather, and vanilla bean. Trust me, it was nice. It was also quite popular amongst my group of female peers- moreso than for men. This was probably due in part to the fact that Sassy magazine touted this fragrance like it was the second coming. And you know what? For 1992 or so, it probably was equivalent to the second coming.

This is a warm, spicy, sweet-ish men's scent. I smell notes of sandlewood, it almost gives off a cinnamon impression. Definitely a woodsy scent.

One of my all time favourite scents. I actually wear this myself but it smells gorgeous on men, and generally I've found that the men who tend to wear it are also pretty gorgeous themselves - win win.

Earthy, spicy, and warm. Very masculine and sensual, yet I love to wear it also! It makes me feel sexy, like snuggling into a boyfriend's sweater after sharing an intimate moment.

I had ordered Egoiste a few weeks ago after reading some excellent reviews, but in the mean time I forgot what scents and notes it was meant to contain. It arrived this morning, and rather than wait for my boyfriend, I immediately had to try it out on myself. I have been markedly distracted ever since: it is intoxicating. Regardless of what it is meant to smell like, I immediately associated it with saddle soap and honey, making it warm and masculine, but also sophisticated. Truly an exceptional cologne!

This smells soooooo good! It is the nicest smelling thing I ever encountered, spicy, warm, sensual and very exciting. It makes me want to sniff my boyfriend all day long. It lasts for ever and doesn't really change during the day. I wish thay would make a more feminine version so I can smell this devine myself.

Egoiste is one of those scents that evokes a strong reaction, you either love it or hate it. Personally it is one of my favorite scents, and one I often get positive comments on from women. The initial smell is overly sweet but I really love the vanilla and sandalwood dry down, and it has great lasting power. I much prefer this to the more popular platinum egoiste which is a lighter fresh scent.

Chanel
Egoiste is a very strange smelling fragrance
that simply tries to go in too many different directions at once. The
tangerine, cinnamon, vanilla, rosewood and sandalwood notes combine
to give Egoiste a sickly sweet "cinnamon rolls in a woodshop"
smell. It reminds me of a dutch oven cobbler cooking over a hot ember
camp fire, minus the smoke. And sadly, the strong rose note only
intensifies the cloying, sickly mess. I find Egoiste to be too
strange for even my eclectic fragrance tastes and that's saying a
lot.
Top
notes: Sicilian Tangerine, Brazilian Rosewood
Middle
notes: Coriander, Damask Rose
Base
notes: Sandalwood, Vanilla, Ambrette seed
UPDATE:
While the EDT is much too cloying and strangely sweet with its
clashing rose, wood and sweet notes, the Cologne
Concentree version of Egoiste is much more
wonderfully blended and balanced. The wood is the more dominant part
instead of the cloying sweetness, while the rose note is also
stronger giving it a vibrant almost sparkling quality. The sweet and
cinnamon notes are not as strong in the CC version and don't punch
you in the face like the EDT. It still has a slight cinnamon roll
accord but it is much more mellow and has a lovely supporting cast of
notes in the much better CC version. This is the one to get?Chanel
Egoiste Cologne Concentree. Though better than the EDT, I still don't
know how to fit it into the fragrance rotation of a young guy like
myself. I find it would probably work best as a romantic evening
fragrance for the 40+ crowd. Because of an extreme lack of
versatility it gets only 3.5 out of 5 lippies and swapped away by me.

Mmmmm...this smells very sexy, I love this stuff. It's pretty unisex too! I didn't care for the Platinum version of this at all though, something is just "off" with that one...but this one...good stuff!!

Do any women besides myself wear this? I just love it for hot days or days when I want to smell business like but a bit mysterious. Don't know the notes, only that it is crisp, clean but still sexy and to me a skin scent. Not musk, not soap, not sandalwood but hecka good. Smells expensive. Too nice to waste on a guy! I keep this to myself. Let DH find his own Holy Grail scent.
