Background on me I have severly oily skin with dry patches from using retin a at night. I have waisted so much money on paula's choice products that really didn't work for me (my bad, I should have ordered samples instead of the full size) but it was all worth it because of this little gem. MY SKIN LOVES THIS STUFF! I'm not kidding - I look forward to putting this on every day! I guess I use it as my moisturizer. I put it on after my Rx antibiotic gel, but before that this was the first thing I put on my face. I am a little red when I first put it on but it goes away. It doesn't sting or irritate my face in any way, it's quite the opposite. It feels very soothing and hydrating. The consistensy is between a gel and a lotion.. on the runny side but its not a liquid. I let it sink in for at least 10 minutes before putting on anything else although I don't really think I have to because it absorbs completely after I massage it on even if I use a lot, and I'm pretty liberal with it. It makes my skin SO SOFT and hydrated. Sometimes I'll go straight into primer then foundation because I don't need any more moisture. I used to be an oil slick by the time I got in the car to go to work but ever since I started using this my oil has been under control. I still have to use at least one mattifying product, whether it's primer, lotion, or powder, but the results are 10 times better than what it used to be. Some days I don't even have to blot at all. I used to blot 5 or 6 times a day. I've gone through 1 1/2 tubes of this now and I think it only took 2 or 3 monthswiring it 5 to 6 times a week. I just bought two backups because they we're 20% off. Bottom line is I can't be without this. Order a sample if you want to try it, I think it's only $1
I've written this review having used a "3 week trial" sample. I'd like to think that this was enough time to get a decent enough feel for the product in order to give a fair account. Before I go into my problems with it, I'll say that I think this was a good serum and I would *think* buy a full size at some point in the future. There are just a couple of things holding me back from jumping straight into it.
It is, as it claims to be, very light on application. This is both good and bad in my opinion; it'll be great to use this again in the height of the summer when oiliness is a real problem. However, I found that it absorbed so quickly that I ended up having to use a dispense a lot of product from the tube to cover my entire face. There was also a fine line between not applying enough and applying too much; the latter of which results in a yellow cast, as mentioned by previous reviews.
The serum made my skin feel nice and smooth, especially after several days of trialling. It seemed very gentle, even around the sensitive eye area. I suppose I didn't use it for long enough to see any major differences, but I don't doubt that there are a lot of benefits to be had from continued use. However, my other main issue was the sizing and price of a tube. This 3 week pack lasted me only 10 days (using twice a day), and I didn't feel I was being overly generous with the application either. A full size portion is six times larger, so I'd imagine this could last a couple of months maximum. Paula's Choice UK prices are pretty ridiculous compared to the US costs, so I'd be very hesitant to shell out this much money so frequently for a product I could most likely live without.
I might give this another go in the summer and use it without a separate moisturiser. That will likely be the real test of whether I'd repurchase or not, but for now it's a regretful "no".
I would actually give this 3.5 stars purely for the fact that it can oxidise with my mineal sunscreen (if I neglect to rub it in properly or wait for the serum to dry) leaving a slightly orangey cast.
Other than that, great product. My skin feel prepped and healthy when I have applied this. I use it everyday and would never be with out it. Just a shame that it sometimes oxidises with my other products.
My HG multi function serum. I also put on Vit c or whitening serum after this for different treatments depending on my mood but this is a staple twice a day treatment for me definitely.
ABOUT ME: I'm a 43-year old Latina woman with very fair olive skin (mature/combination/sensitive type). I have some minor facial lines and redness.
USAGE: I've used this product intermittently over the past 4-6 months, usually once daily in the morning, following cleanser, toner, and BHA exfoliant. I apply a few drops and stroke lightly all over my face, then lightly pat around my eyes onto the orbital bone.
RESULTS/REVIEW: I'm about halfway through the tube and I've come to feel this is an "almost-great product." Meaning it does A LOT for my skin, but there are still "issues" I think Paula's Choice should have resolved BEFORE hiking up the price tag to $30 per tube. The issues include:
1) This serum is water-light with minimal "slip." It dries down to a wonderful "naked" feel/finish (NO stickiness or tackiness or lingering odor.) The challenge with the watery lack of "slip" is that I can't really use a small amount to treat my entire face since product only "goes so far." This means I must use MORE product to cover my face to enjoy the VERY GOOD antioxidant benefits.
2) If I use MORE product to ensure adequate benefit, the product ends up creating an unsightly yellow cast on my fair skin. I don't mean golden, I mean BRIGHT VISIBLE YELLOW (as in lemons, school buses, jaundice, etc.) It shows through foundations and concealers.
3) Consumers reporting the "yellow cast" effect to PC are advised that they applied too much product. And that's it.
4) Product is packaged in a small plastic tube. Good for the antioxidants but it's hard to "measure out" a "standard amount" to prevent the "yellow cast". I think a pump container MIGHT help regulate the amount, but that won't solve the problem if consumers need >1 and <2 pumps.
5) I've tried blending this serum with PC Skin Balancing Antioxidant Serum (to increase slip and prime skin) and while this has helped SOMEWHAT, I've still had "oops!" mornings where I didn't squeeze the "just-right-not-too-much" amount of Ultra-Light serum into the "cocktail," which means I'm yellow-faced -- or "patched" with yellow -- for the day. PC has also started selling it's C15 "booster" and one could use it to dilute the serum, but is it really reasonable to sell consumers one $30 product that requires another $30 serum or a $45 booster product to ensure POSSIBLE decent application?
This is a LOVELY, very skin-friendly product. A real boon to oily complexions. Honestly, I think this agrees with me and benefits me more than retinol serums. But the cosmetic challenge is frustrating to deal with. I could save it for my evening skin care routine, but the whole point of purchase was to have a more lightweight product to apply under makeup for daytime use.
I think if PC wasn't pricing products to match department store formulas, I wouldn't be so disappointed. But if I pay $30 for a serum, I expect that serum to absorb cleanly into my skin without any additional cosmetic challenges. This product is too expensive to have this kind of "side effect" and for PC to blame consumers for using too much product instead of apologizing like professionals and re-formulating (product and/or packaging) to accommodate this defect.
All of PC's other antioxidant serums are thicker, with a consistency like gel or a silicone-based primer, whereas this product is thin and watery. Thus, it is easy to apply and just vanished into your skin once dry. It's packed with anti-irritants and antioxidants and starts showing results much sooner than expected - I noticed smoother skin, smaller pores, diminished under eye circles, more even skin tone, and softer wrinkles within one week, which is pretty amazing! I'm not saying the results are dramatic, but I noticed a difference, which I think is remarkable for one week of use!
ETA: I love this stuff so much, I was sad to put it away. But either because my skin got drier from using other anti-aging products (e.g., retinol) or because my skin got drier due to colder, drier weather moving in during the fall and winter, I've had to put this away for now and switch to the RESIST Antioxidant Serum (for daytime) and Skin Recovery Antioxidant Serum with Retinol and RESIST Retinol Serum (alternating nights). I still think the formula of the Ultra-Light Serum is wonderful; my dry, sensitive skin just needed some more hydrating and protective. I occasionally still use it when I can, but when I do, I can tell my skin is not as well hydrated as when I use the other AOX serums I mentioned.
The best serum I've ever used, given the results and the price. This is non-irritating to my redness-prone skin, sinks right in, has amazing ingredients, and is affordable. (I bought mine for $25 during one of PC's frequent 15% off sales!)
Paula's choice as a company seems to divide people; I for one find the reviews on the website of other product lines sanctimonious and self-righteous, and hardly unbiased considering that the site shamelessly promotes its own cosmetic range. Also, some of the 'scientific' information can sometimes be a little 'off'. However, i have to eat some humble pie here: this is a great serum. Although the product is marketed towards combination/oily skin, I think that this would be suitable for all skin types as it is not drying. For the price this product is amazing value, it is packed with great ingredients. Indeed, if this were made by a so-called premium line, you could pay in excess of £70. I have oily yet sensitive skin and this product has caused no irritation or breakouts. In addition, as I sometimes have stubble, this serum absorbs straight away and doesn't clump into the beard area. Furthermore, I use some prescription topicals and this, along with some of the other items in the Paula's choice range, is easy to incorporate with these.
Another excellent product from Paula! This is the light serum for oily skins. But as serums are treatments not moisturisers , this is suitable for anyone. It's not a liquid which I expected but a very thin lotion texture. Sinks right in and is absorbed instantly.Excellent for day wear under sunscreen and make up if wearing it .Full of antioxidants and other skin beneficial ingredients, such as niacinimide and vitamin c. No perfumes alcohol or added dyes, which is must for me. I hate fragranced skincare,it serves no purpose to the skin whatsoever. Most of her other serums are heavier but this is what it says, ultra light. You wont know it's there but you will reap the benefits. So glad I tried this as at 56 my skin isn't oily, but I love it and will continue to purchase. Most highly recommended!
I bought this based on the reviews. I needed something to fill my order to make the min. purchase of 50 for free shipping. I am so happy I bought this. It is amazing. I have been using it without the need of an additional moisturizer. This summer has been so hot and humid. I usually wear moisturizer, but I have been looking like a grease pit. I hate a sweaty face of make up! The cap was only a half turn from being off when I got this and some product was in the cap. I called to inquire as PC products usually have a protective seal before opening. They said due to shipping and how the products undergo some pressure, they did not put a seal. She offered to send me a new one, but I declined said it wasn't all the way off and only a small bit came out in the cap, which I used a q-tip to get out. She sent my 5 samples of this anyway :). Their customer service is mostly outstanding, I did have one occurance where the girl was a real stinker, but hey everyone has bad days..... ( I hope )
I will edit this review if I break out. I want to give it some time. I do have some break outs now because of 2 hours a day running and sweating with 50 spf on my face. Sweat and spf don't mix. I do use PC BHA 9; lovely product as well, to spot treat these little buggers. Anyway this is a fabulous product; I HIGHLY recommend!
