Ugh, ugh, ugh. I still cringe whenever I think about how this product made my hair feel even though I haven't had it in my possession for quite some time now. I wound up giving my Coconut CoWash away because it left my hair feeling awful. It was horribly dry after using this and nearly impossible to detangle, even with my heaviest of conditioners. I nearly panicked in the shower feeling my brush seize up in my hair and hearing that dreaded distinct "snap, crackle, pop" of my strands as I attempted to detangle them. Though the Cowash left my scalp feeling wonderfully clean each time I used it, it always left my curls a matted nightmare.
My hair's reaction to the Coconut CoWash was much the way it reacts to plain old coconut oil. I've read that coconut oil reinforces the protein in your hair and that, while this is wonderful for some, it's not so much for those of us that have enough protein on our own. Coconut oil seems to make our hair TOO strong. Therefore, it then becomes hard and dry. Sort of like a protein overdose. I believe some people call this phenomenon being "protein sensitive".
This might seem like a given to some but I had never even considered the possibility that because As I Am's Coconut CoWash obviously has coconut oil in it, my hair would react this way. I regularly use other products that feature coconut oil as a main ingredient (Shea Moisture's Coconut & Hibiscus line, for example) without any issues at all. Needless to say, if your hair and coconut oil are mortal enemies, this product may not be for you.
Love this product! Hate the packaging! This is a great Co-washing product for the price. It leaves my curls clean, moisturized and detangled. I hate the "scooping out" aspect of this container. I don't know why they just did not put it in a regular bottle with a pump or a squeeze tube.
I wanted to try this since I had read such good reviews on this, it's true it is an excellent product. I have really long, thick, curly if my hair is short but still pretty wavy almost a curl with it at my waist. It get's super frizzy and I can never have enough moisture so I thought this would be a good product to try. So I got it at Sally's for around 7$ and I love it! I used it after I coloured my hair after I rinsed the colour out I put about 3 scoops or enough to coat all my hair then threw it into a bun. I then do my regular shower stuff scrub, shave,etc,..Then before it is time to get out I take my hair out and use a wide tooth comb or the Wet Brush. I was able to comb my hair with no issue and when I rinsed it felt really nice not squeaky clean but clean and moisturized. It has great slip as well!
Once it was toweled dry I sprayed some One N Only argan spray and put it in a braid. When I took my hair out it was so soft, shiny, smooth, and didn't need any extra products like argan oil etc,. I love it the curls are defined and look so pretty and my hair is soft, smooth, and feels so good! I love this stuff and can't wait for my nephew to try it as he is biracial and his hair has these amazing curls that I know this product will just make better and less frizz. I will definitely be repurchasing for myself and boyfriend who loves easy hair products and for my nephew because for a 3 year old it's perfect for him and my sister;)
If you're in Sally's definitely give this product a shot they have a great return policy if you don't like it. The only thing I wish like others have said I wish it wasn't in a jar. For me it's not a deal breaker though. For me personally I think this is way better than Wen on my hair. I usually use One N Only Argan shampoo & conditioner but this is a great alternative. It does just as well as my argan products. This is a very good product and is worth a go for sure if you want more defined curls with less frizz. You also cut back on the extra products to get the curls you want. So to me it's a winner.:) Definitely Recommended!
This is absolutely AMAZING!
I usually do a hot oil treament on my hair (raw honey, olive oil, jojoba, rosemary, peppermint, grapeseed) and obviously i need something to help cleanse my hair. I use the baking soda apple cider vinegar wash method but baking soda isnt enough
I purchased this after reading some many good reviews on amazon and it is AMAZING!
leaves my hair clean moisturizing and smells great. Defintely a HG kinda of product. The slip it has is wonderful.
Let me start off by saying they should have never put this product in a jar, just like the other ladies have mentioned... big no-no. Water gets allllll up in that thang. A pump or bottle would have been much better. Easier to apply that way too without digging in a jar and getting water in it...
But, I can say that I will probably not go back to shampoos. Not even sulfate-free shampoos. This cleansing conditioner leaves my hair soft and manageable. Softer than when I used my shampoo from Shea Moisture. My curls pop, especially at the roots, which is surprising since my roots are always hella frizzy!
Usually I pre-poo with coconut oil and olive oil for a few hours to overnight (I do detangle while I'm pre-pooing with a wide tooth comb). Then I rinse out the oils for about 2 minutes then I apply the cleansing conditioner. I don't repeat just because I don't like my hair having that super squeaky clean feeling. One application is enough for me!
I always always always follow with a conditioner though... just because my hair tends to feel a little dry after a few minutes out of the shower after using this product. Herbal Essences Hello Hydration is PERFECT as a conditioner. They work together so well to keep the moisture in my hair. It's also good enough to have a DC follow the co-wash.
**Please note: This is not a shampoo. It's a cleansing conditioner. It WON'T LATHER.
White, 2c/3a with long fine hair. Trying out lots of cowash products to see what works best. This is the best so far. My hair feels really clean, and the curls are lovely and defined. I got two compliments the first day I used it.
So I got talked into by the sales associate at Sally's to try this product. I'm so happy I tried it. I'm just starting into the co-wash thing. This product is wonderful. Lotion like in consistency which makes massaging into my hair effortless. Lovely coconut smell...tropical. Rinses out easily. Leave hair clean and non-greasy. My hair is super soft the next day (I wash my hair at night and airdry).
Only issue is the jar. I transferred it into an empty Hair One pump to keep the water out.
So compared to other co washes that I've tried Loreal and Hair One this is far superior. Plus a bonus in regards to cost. Super cheap.
UPDATE. So I've used Wen for a month. This wash is still pretty good, but not comparable to Wen. For the price, give Co-washing a try.
This is the best product to use to co-wash your hair with hands down! It has a nice coconut smell to it. It really aids with softening one's hair during the cleansing process. It provides lots of slip to my hair, which makes detangling a breeze! And, it comes in a nice size 16 ounce container that retails for less than $8.
It has a light yet creamy consistency to it, which makes it totally easy to spread throughout your hair. It hasnever caused ay buildup on my scalp. And it rinses away very nicely the hair, without eaving any residue behind.
This product comes in a screw top container. Which I don't find to best type of pcaging for this particular product. As, you have to be very careful with not getting any water in the container. Instead, I feel that it would be best for the makers of this product to put it in a bottle with either a cap or pump to it.
This product will forever remain a ataple in my hair care regimen.
This product is so perfect for my fine, curly, greasy scalped, dry ended hair. It feels like lotions when you use it and when you rinse it out it feels clean and silky soft. I only wash my scalp and it washes out my ends without drying them out. I don't like the smell but my hair has never retained this much body while being so soft before. And I swear it defines my curls too! I love love love it!
I used As I Am this morning. After I wet my hair and massaged the product on my scalp and onto my hair the wide-tooth comb sailed right through my hair- and that's no small feat- my hair is THICK, long and wavy. It's not uncommon for me to get tired of trying to comb out knots and just cut them out.
My hairdresser forgives me for the chopped chunks of hair she finds...
My hair is completely dry now and is is amazingly soft! I can run my fingers through it without snagging and I have nice, shiny curls without massive frizz! ( I was out in misty rain earlier, so that probably didn't help any) The coconut smell was there, but it seemed to dissipate as it dried.
I may straighten my hair tonight (using One and Only Mist for heat protection) I'll post an update on how it looks straight.
