I had to try out and actually end up buying Disciple lipstick because it looked like a strange, but delightful twist on a trend that happened some 15 years ago that wasn't half bad actually!
Circa 15 years ago women who were NC45 and NW45 and darker than both started wearing black lipstick, which looked better with clear gloss over it usually and it was a trend that looked surprisingly good, as opposed to being silly, or Halloween-ish. Mary J. Blige wore this 'black lipstick with gloss' look in one of her music videos around that time.
Well to finally make a point, Disciple is close to that but deliciously different as a dark true navy blue that has a bit of shimmer, but not full-on or chunky glitter thank goodness. Disciple, like most of Illamasqua's lipsticks, has a matte texture.
I will be wearing Disciple with preferrably a clear gloss such as Illamasqua's Brilliant lip gloss, which is long lasting and gratefully non-sticky feeling, as I'm sure Disciple would look even more flattering on me that way. I saw a girl once who was more of an NC10, I'd say, wear Disciple out on the street in the daytime without any gloss and she looked artsy-musician-y or 'musician for a boyfriend'-y without looking like a Goth, so to me Disciple seems more accessible and flexible than it lets on.
Illamasqua does make a matte black lipstick called Pristine but on their website it looked a little greyish-black from an angle albeit without any shimmer, and at some angles black lipstick doesn't look as rich as a black sometimes. Meanwhile, the dark navy blue Disciple looks very rich, or true. I'm an NC45.
UPDATE: Yes this Disciple has converted me over to its side! LOL I love it fully, opaquely applied on with just a pop of clear gloss in the middle of my lips. And I'm sure other people will be able to pull Disciple off in the same way! Very happy with it! :)
