On my hunt for a non-avobenzone containing, hi spf/hi ppd SS, I came across this gem - I truly like it and have been using on a daily basis since last August.
PROS:
(1) no white cast (I'm NC 15, Fairly Light in EM, lightest or 2nd lightest in most d/s foundations in winter and 1 - 2 shades darker in summer).
(2) no breakouts or skin irritations. In fact, I find the hi zinc content to be soothing to my subtype I (blushing) rosacea on my cheeks, nose and chin.
(3) no worsening of melasma as had been happening w/ some chem SS. However, as I have not tested throughout a summer yet, the big test will be this summer and I will update accordingly.
(4) sinks into my skin rather quickly - takes only slightly longer than my regular facial moisturizers - w/ no residual tackiness left behind.
(5) wears beautifully under my MMU and my liquid foundation
CONS:
(1) I can only obtain online = minor inconvenience.
(2) I did find the need over the winter to mix in w/ a moisturizer (I was careful to dispense my usual amount into my hand first than add in some of my Eucerin Q10 sensitive skin moisturizer and then add more SS to counteract any potential reduction in effectiveness resultant of adding in moisturizer = required a bit more rubbing in, but results so worth in. Not sure if I will have to continue in warmer months like this or not - to be continued...
Not only will I re-purchase, I have already - several times. :)

This is one of my cant live without products! I am have fair, sensitive, and acne prone skin and this stuff works amazingly well! It feels weightless on the skin and sinks in and dries better than anything I have ever tried. No greasy residue and no white cast. It offers better sun protection than anything I could buy at the drugstore. The price is a little high at $17 but it is still cheaper than many other brands and the bottle will last me 6 months easily.
I live near the ocean and I apply this daily no matter what! I feel like my skin is a lot more even and calm since using this! They say zinc Oxide is very soothing to the skin and can help control acne. That is certainly true in my case. I will never be without this again :)

Without a doubt the worst sunscreen I have tried. So very upset.
I am NOT a person that breaks out- I have used sunscreens that are like oil vats on my face and have not had a single pimple.
The first time I trialled this I got a massive massive breakout- over my forehead, cheeks. I thought I'd cease this and see what happens- the breakout resolved. So I thout I'd retry the sunscreen a month later. Again I had a massive breakout this time also including my upper lip. The break out was so bad (from 5 days of use) that I developed scarring at the acne site including my upper lip(so I have massive post inflammatory hyper pigmentation spots) and cheek (this one was hyper pigmented and indented a little).
I'm so upset I feel like uploading the photos of my hyper pigmentation and scarring.
Hyper pigmentation was the whole reason I needed sunscreen in the first place.
Not only did I have the break out but I was tanning/ burning and becoming more hyperpigmented in spots. And I had relatively short periods of sun exposure (ie 15 min walk to work and back) on very sunny days. So I don't believe it provided me with the appropriate sun protection.
I suppose the pros were that the formula was not very oily- in fact slightly drying.
It seemed to stay on for long periods of time- even through sweat etc.
I bought this because of the good reviews on EDS. If I ever met the girl who gave such rave reviews I would show her my wedding photos and show her the big hyper pigmented spots visible in all the photos :-(

I just realized that I haven't yet reviewed this HG of mine. I first tried the Clean & Clear SPF 32 & found it to be too thick & hard to blend on my somewhat dry skin. I was thrilled to then try this one, which has a much smoother texture, isn't sticky in the slightest, blends like a dream (I do moisturize w/ oil & let that soak in first), leaves no white cast & a very natural finish. I've been using it consistently for almost 2 years with no plans to search for something better. I don't say that about many products! continued >>

I like this product. I primarily use it around my eyes. No burning, no cloying scent. Does the job (at least I hope it does... I'll let you know in a few years!). I do not use on the T-zone of my face because I am afraid of breakouts (I use a different ss there). Isn't drying to me. In fact, I use in place of moisturizer. My only complaint is that the tube is defective and doesn't close well. That means I can't carry it with me. Otherwise, great.

Me -- dry, sensitive skin prone to freckling and redness. I think Burnout is a great sunscreen, but not HG for me, for a few reasons. It goes on thick but sinks in with only a slight to no white cast (depending on how much you put). I don't like that you can always feel it on your skin, maybe its the glycerin; it's just a thick, heavy feeling. Biggest con -- very drying! It helps (somewhat) when I use a moisturizer underneath but even then at the end of the day my skin feels parched and tight. Definitely would not be able to use this during the winter. Might be a good ss for oily skin.
However, for the time being it is usable. I like the high zinc content and great ingredients. I wish it were less drying and heavy feeling. It's also a pain to order online (didn't find it at Whole Foods). The price -- right on the edge of being too expensive for me (w/ S&H), but that being said it IS a good product and you get a good amount so I won't quibble. Would purchase again but am looking for something less drying. continued >>

UPDATE: (2012-02): tested out properly swimming in the Pacific Ocean: superb. 6 lippies.
BurnOut OT is one of the three all-physical sunscreens made by BurnOut (they also used to make a part-chemical one, now no more). The other two are the BurnOut Eco-Sensitive Clean and Clear SPF 32--for a long time, my main sunscreen, and highly recommended for sensitive-skinned persons--and the Kids SPF30+ Physical Sunscreen. All three use zinc oxide as their filter and are unscented.
Main differences in fomulation (ingredients at end of review): Ocean Tested has hemp oil and glyceryl stearate SE, the Kids one has plantain leaf and papaya extracts, and the Eco-Sensitive has none of that but aloe vera, vitamin E, & citric acid.
The Eco-Sensitive is oil-free but water-based, so not as waterproof as the other two. But easier to remove and has a nicer immediate skin-feel. It feels slightly drier on the skin, faster. On drier skin, it certainly needs some decent moisturizing underneath; but tweakability means it's useful for a fairly wide range of skin-types. This one is probably better on oilier skins and for most everyday use (unless surfing is your day-job) as it's easier to remove. Actually, I admit that I've often rolled into bed tired and forgotten to remove it, and not suffered for it at all. The downside of that is that it runs a higher risk of running and rubbing off during the day too, being less tenacious and water-based; though I for one have never burned while wearing it.
The Ocean Tested has a very slightly sticky feel--that's the waterproofy oiliness--but sinks in and feels and looks just as velvety-matte, albeit after a few more minutes than the Eco-Sensitive. If it still feels sticky to the touch, try some sort of finishing powder on top. It's quite waterproof--tested out swimming--and needs proper removal. Though nowhere near as much as something like the super-tenacious Vanicream, or siliconey sweat-proof sorts. The Ocean Tested is a better bet if you're drier, if you don't mind cleaning it off at night properly, if you want to be assured of solid protection through the day (without going for clown-face heavy sunscreen, covering yourself up completely, etc.), and indeed if your day will involve more outdoor and/or aquatic activities.
Choosing between the two? On aesthetics, once they're on and sunk in, there's not much to choose between them. The main difference would be your own wants and needs: practical stuff outlined above. Check ingredients for any known triggers (acne, irritation, rosacea, etc.), as ever. I prefer the Ocean Tested as it's moister and doesn't have aloe vera (a current mild irritant).
All the BurnOuts are in a different league from most of the "greener" sunscreen market. Up to mainstream standards (drugstore and indeed department-store and high-end). Not whitening. Other things to report: as with the other versions tried (and used longer-term), no immediate irritation and no burning, no zits
Cruelty-free, no silicones (I can use dimethicone but no other silicones, especially not the volatile ones, without irritation and minor clogging), environmentally-friendly, biodegradable, and actually actively designed for use in the ocean, without causing damage. Other viable alternatives for eco-friendly water-sports and so on: pretty much anything that's got coated and/or micro zinc oxide. Further recommendations on ZnO-only sunscreens, see the zincsunscreens notepad.
Costs USD17.99 direct from the manufacturer. Available in some health-food / eco-stores in the US.
My other face sunscreen, equallyZnO-based and green etc., is Eco Logical Face SPF 30+. It's moister, but twice the price. I've included its ingredients for comparison at the end of. Eco Logical also have a Body s/s, same price as the BurnOut ones but moister. Both work as good eye-area sunscreens. The Body version has more oil and is waterproof (tested to Australian standards), thought not as w/p as BurnOut IME. The Face one is about as waterproof as BurnOut Eco-Sensitive. Worth bearing in mind depending on what you're looking for in a sunscreen.

I wanted to like this and I know it's popular, but I really disliked it.
moisture factor: It was veeeeeery drying. To the point where i felt like I looked 5 years older because my skin was that dehydrated, although I used olive oil at night. I tried to like it for a few weeks, but the drying is way too much...it's not a surface flaky but rather a wrinkle inducing dehydration at what appears to be a deeper layer- its a bad look
Irritation: It also was slightly irritating. Less so than chemical sunscreens, but more so than the total block, which I've gone back to.
White cast: It has a slight white cast, which is exactly what I was hoping to get away from ( total block, my standby also has a white cast) . Some people might consider this slight, but I don't. I have that very pale, bluish type of skin, and for me anything that takes away the very slight bit of warmth my skin has and pushes me over the border of paler and bluer makes me just look too unattractive. Total block has exact same level of white, for anyone wondering.
Texture: This is where I feel total block wins. Somehow, I feel like even though total block is slighty drying as well, the overall effect is silky and fine. With Burnout KIDS , I feel like there is a 'rougher' effect on my skin.
Maybe something in it is just irritating my skin, but it doesn't feel as finely micronized or whatever they do to the sunscreens as total block.
Summary: I am sticking with total block because althought the dreaded whiteness is the same, it is slightly less drying and irritating. I am going to keep looking.
Customer Service: very nice. I will see if they will let me return it. maybe the ocean -tested will be a perfect fit
Update: 2/2012. This made me go without sunscreen for six months until I found a different product. Kept trying this because I hadn't found anything better. Still stings and irritates. Still dries face out and makes skin texture gross. Still leaves a white later. Would never wear on a date.
I tried Epicuren's zinc sunscreen and it is perfect for me-finally I can wear sunscreen again!
PS I only give it a 3 because I found many physical sunscreens are even grosser as far as texture and white case goes. So it may be 'ok' while you search for the perfect product

This sunscreens works better for me than their Clean and Clear zinc oxide sunscreen. I find this one slightly less dry, but I still must use a moisturizer underneath. This sunscreen is extremely waterproof. I prefer a less waterproof sunscreen for everyday so that the skin can breathe. I still prefer waterproof ss if I'm in the water or sweating though. I'm giving this 5 stars for use in those cases. This has 18.6% non-nano zinc oxide. I'm pale with warm undertones and this is not whitening on me. I purchase this at my Whole Foods for approximately $17 for 3.4 oz. I almost forgot to add the most important part. The ingredients are nontoxic. Also, it has antioxidants, hemp seed oil and plankton extract. ******UPDATE****I'm using this daily during summer of 2011. It's disappearing into the skin nicely since it's summer weather.
