I really love this sunscreen. It hasn't caused any sort of issue with my sensitive skin. It has only improved it. It wears great under makeup and doesn't turn me into a grease ball. My skin looks healthier and my pigmentation issues are fading much faster. I will definitely keep buying this product. You will need a moisturizer underneath if you have dry skin.
Pros:
-amazing liquid form, applies thin and works as a primer
-high SPF doesn't cause oily skin
-no acne breakouts or clogged pores
-enhancing the efficacy of my other skin care products
-acne marks are fading faster
Cons:
-the price tag, but totally worth it

I use retin-a and spend a lot of time outside in the summer. Always looking for sunscreens for the pool and to wear under makeup. Found a few sunscreens which work for the pool but virtually nothing to use as a makeup base. Discovered this towards the end of last summer and it might be the one. At least the one I wear under my makeup in the summer.
Pro:
-No balling/pilling under makeup.
-High SPF.
-No white cast, although my skin is light to begin with.
-Great texture after applied. Many others are sticky or feel heavy.
-Dries rapidly.
-Leaves a smooth silky, matte finish.
-Didn't sting.
---------------------------------------------------
Cons:
-Might be too harsh for those with sensitive skin.
-Some say it's expensive, but if it remains comparable to luxury brands it seems reasonably priced.
Would be a 5 if it were also ideal for swimming.
Will update if I experience a change of heart, or find something better. I know how difficult a good cost effective sunscreen is to find.

Oh I REALLY wanted to like this product but unfortunately after 2 days of use I developed clogged pores and 4 large pimples on my forehead and chin. I rarely ever break out and when I do it's usually related to new face products.
Pros:
Light and very easy to apply. Product is very runny
Goes on light and sinks in immediately.
Doesn't sting, ball up, or leave a white cast. Truly feels like there is NOTHING on your face
Matte finish
Negatives:
Cost - the bottle is very small
If you are sensitive to chemical sunscreens you will probably have trouble with breakouts
It's worth trying if you can tolerate chemical ss but sadly I can't :(

i am a natural redhead with very fair, sensitive skin, so sunscreen is an absolute must for me. i wanted to like neutrogena's ultra sheer liquid daily sunblock because it's so light and easy to apply, but i developed contact dermatitis while using it. it made my skin very dry, itchy, and red. i should have known it wasn't good because it stung badly when i applied it on top of my lotion and under my makeup. definitely not recommended for sensitive skin.

this product works great as a sunblock and foundation primer because it has silicone in it. If you cannot afford mac face primer with spf 50 than this is a great alternative.

Good sunscreen, dries quickly without white cast or grease, but keep it the hell away from your eyes and any dry spots because it will sting like crazy. I'll still repurchase.

I really wanted to love this sunscreen, but unfortunately there is some ingredient(s) that my skin doesn't agree with. After 2 days of use I started to develop really bad clogged pores and 2 large pimples on my chin. I rarely ever break out and when I do it's usually related to new face products. I also noticed this stung during application, but the sensation did dissipate after a few minutes. I really like Neutrogena and have had quite a bit of success with many of their products, but this one just didn't agree with me.

This is my first bottle of this product and I am happy to give full thumbs up (or almost). It is a white runny liquid that doesn't leave any white ghostly shade on the face and disappears completely under make up. I apply it on top of my regular moisturizer and it blends in efffortlessly. The only thing I really don't like about it, is the terrible chemical smell..bleah!!!
I saw this product on Lisa Eldridge website but I live in Italy and since I couldn't get my hands on it here , I had to send my husband with a shopping list to New York drugstores when he was there on a business trip ;-). Hope the Neutrogena people can sort this out and come out here too very soon with the full range!!!!

I have been using this product for close to two years. I'm probably on my 4th or 5th bottle and have used both the 55 spf and 70 spf. I never go out without it even though I work indoors. I do, however, often go outside on my lunch hour and of course the days are longer now. Sun protection is critical to me for two reasons: I've had melanoma (been clear for 20 years now) and the ridiculous and noticeable damage that more than a few minutes in the sun does to my skin. (FYI-I live in beautiful San Diego) While I certainly prefer the extra protection of the 70, it is oilier than the 55. If you decide to use either formula I echo what others have said and strongly recommend the following. These are also the reasons I'm giving a rating of 4 and not 5:
--Wash your hands thoroughly after use. When I put on makeup after application (which is almost always), I wash my hands THREE times. Seriously. Once is NOT enough, and twice may not be, so the third time is my "insurance". If you don't do this, you may end up with a constant stream of tears for the next 3 days. It burns, it's irritating and totally jacks up your eye makeup, etc. This has happened to me more then once. It's awful.
--Blot after application. I apply, then go wash my hands, then gently blot, then apply my makeup. The product still seems just as effective (but hey--this isn't a clinical trial) but it helps minimize the inevitable oil slick, especially with the spf70. If you forget to blot before you apply your makeup, you can do so between applying liquid makeup and powder. Keep an eye out...you may have to do so later as well. (Don't have your blotters with you and skeptical of tissue? Use a toilet seat liner.)

For me, use of this product is not optional. Just about any other forumla (including N.) that comes in a tube and is thick, is SUPER greasy (I don't care what the tube says) if not sooner, then later. I used to use those because there were no other choices. My first leap to this type of product was Shisheido. I think the spf was 45. But after N. came out with the higher spf and, well the heckofa lot lower price, I've never looked back.

One other thing---I use either this product or one of the creamier ones (N.'s Spectrum spf100) on my decollette but beware!!!! If you are wearing white clothing (t-shirt, whatever) it WILL discolor the edges of your collar, so be super-diligent about spraying before laundering. I ruined at least 2 shirts before I wised up to this.
For what it's worth, I am 46 and am often told I look much younger. While the signs of aging are certainly showing, I really think consistent use of sun protection is holding the worst of it at bay--for now.
Oh yes--one more preachy thing--if you are a sun worshiper or use tanning beds, your skin, and possibly your health, is doomed.
(Note: I am posting this under both listings--for the spf55 and spf70--since I address both products) continued >>

Seriously, my search is over. I have been searching and searching for a ss that i can wear under makeup that doesn't make my makeup look cakey or just plain ugly, searching for a sunscreen that doesn't break me out or dry me out. Halleluyah, I have found it. I put my moisturizer on, then I rub this in and it blends like a dream. No pilling or weird mixing like others do. I literally blends right in with my moisturizer. This is sheer, not shiny or sticky in the slightest bit. My makeup goes on like a dream over it, no pilling or weird blending, just like normal. Where has this been all my life! And, it's waterproof and sweatproof and does not have sodium chloride or alcohol in it! And it doesn't break me out! I usually can't have the best of both worlds but with this I can! Go out and get it girls! You won't be disappointed!

I bought this sunscreen when it hit the market last year. As someone with oily, sensitive skin, finding a sunscreen with a good finish and good protection is always a struggle. I used this for a while and did like the texture. It's very matte and comfortable, but I could have done without the flowery scent. After a while, I noticed the collars of my white undershirts were turning yellow. I found out that avobenzone, the UVA filter in Neutrogena's Helioplex products, was the culprit. Avobenzone reacts with the minerals in water and is nearly impossible to remove from clothes. Also, this started to sting when I applied it to my face (not good). Over time, I've abandoned avobenzone sunscreens in favor of zinc oxide for UVA protection. Still, this is a good sunscreen to consider if you need sun protection under make-up (I'm a guy, so I don't wear any) or don't need to worry about collar stains.

Love! It doesn't leave that sunscreen smell, doesn't leave me sticky or oily and is easy to reapply. Love it!

I'm from Australia, and the highest SPF we have this is in 30+. So, that's what I'm reviewing :) It's the same formula, just lower SPF. It's oil free. BIG PLUS!
This stuff is great. Light, goes on smooth. Doesn't give me a white cast. It perfect under my MAC Select foundation. Stops me from getting burnt. I don't get any freckles with this. Doesn't migrate into my eyes.
Cons though: Makes me break out, I have dry skin patches at the end of the day if I wear this, and it feels greasy after application.

Finally, a drugstore liquid face sunscreen with high SPF. Goes on smoothly and leaves no streaks. Best facial sunscreen I've tried so far.

My face has been oilier since I've been doing glycolic peels, for some reason. Was using Eucerin spf30 but had to switch to something that wouldn't make my makeup slide off and get shiny.
LOVE IT. No stinging, doesn't migrate to my eyes. I apply it quite heavily and let it dry for about 5 minutes before I put on makeup. No whiteness, and I'd be comfortable using it alone without makeup.
HG for now.

Best facial sunscreen ever, perfect under makeup. I wouldn't change a thing. BUT, I would add a couple more options to the line, like a 15 and 30 spf as well.

I really wanted to like this product because I've been waiting for a light-textured liquid sunscreen like this for a long time! I finished my first bottle in about 5 weeks then immediately purchased the second bottle. But I found that it actually causes zits. I have very acne-prone skin but I can distinguish the pimples caused by imbalanced hormone levels from the ones caused by external skincare products. Unfortunately this sunscreen does cause me zits, the ones that are deep in the skin and get inflamed terribly in a few weeks. As a result, I had to stop using this on my face. It is still a very good sunscreen for body though.

I almost never review a product unless it is a real winner. I have used EVERY sunscreen known to man and none of them are perfect. This one comes pretty close. I was using the Sofina sunscreen which is also very good, but I have to order it online and it is almost twice as expensive. The Sofina is preferable if you are not going to wear makeup because it truly does dry very matte which I find challenging to apply makeup over. The Neutrogena is cheaper, readily available, and while it also dries matte, there is just enough slip that concealer or cream blush glides right over it. When I first started using these very liquidy sunscreens I was worried that they were not up to the job, but I do not burn or freckle with them.
