Works amazing and so cheap. I have long hair and am lazy with my hair and waves is no fuss. I spray it on and tie my hair in a bun before work while doing makeup and off I go. It seems like all the beach salt sprays were discontinued, first John Frieda and then the Sunsilk I was using. This is a great alternative and works just as good. You can customize it with whatever you have on hand. I did 4 oz of water (I only had that size bottle) and I put in 1 tsp epsom salt and 1 tsp fancy kitchen sea salt and than a squirt of suave lilac and lavender conditioner. I think I'll try adding a squirt of gel or hair spray maybe and see how that holds up. There are also plenty of sites out there where you can buy hydrolized silk and such and think I might experiment when I have more time.

This is wonderful! I'm really shocked I hadn't thought about it before. My hair looks so beautiful when leaving the beach, this works really well.
I let it get like 80% dry, and then I spray it in, and when it dries, or if I dry my hair with the blow dryer on low, it will make my hair look devilishly sexy, and messy.
It's really nice to do on those days you don't exactly want to use the curling iron, or the straightening iron, or on days where it's too humid to straighten your hair.
1 tbsp of Sea salt,
8oz of water
and a squeeze of lemon, (It adds natural highlights to your hair when in the sun)
Its dirt cheap, works well, natural, and easy!
It might dry your hair out, but its nothing a little biosilk, or coconut oil will fix when rubbed into hair, (A dab though)
I think everyone, with all hair types should try it!
Just for the record, I have really dark brown hair (virgin hair), that's thick, and a lot of hair, with a lot of lushness, and it gets oily quick.

This Sea Salt Spray I recently made has been the answer to my prayers! My hair is thick and has natural wave/curl to it along with devilish puff and frizz. Products like spray gel or mouse alone leave my hair crunchy and it still frizzes once it's dry. Moisturizing products weigh it down and my curls end up weird looking... and the frizz is STILL there. I went on a hunt for something different and thankfully I found this recipe. I use a 6 oz spray bottle, a tablespoon of sea salt, Herbal Essences Hello Hydration Conditioner, and Garnier Fructise strong hold Spray Gel. I put more conditioner and gel in mine than what the usual recipe recommends. That's my favorite thing about this product - you can adjust it however your hair needs you to. And it works amazingly! The salt curls my hair beautifully just like a day at the beach, the conditioner keeps it soft and hydrated and gives it a nice fragrance, and the gel keeps it looking great all day. It's the perfect combination for hair like mine. However I would recommend not using TOO much sea salt and applying it to your hair over the tub... because my bathroom counter is growing salt crystals haha!

I have naturally wavy hair, but it is FAR from perfect waves. When I tried a sea salt spray recipe, my frizzy messy hair was transformed into lustrous waves that stayed in place the whole day. My recipe (I used a 8oz spray bottle): 1 tablespoon of course sea-salt, large dollop of strong hold gel and a squirt of Macadamian Nut Oil and just add warm water and mix very well (or the oil will separate from the water!). I highly recommend :)

I love beach hair, so I was disappointed that this didn't work for me as well as epsom salt does. It was a fail for me. I'll keep my sea salt for food & use epsom salt instead.

Thanks to erotas13's recipe, I successfully made some good salt spray.
I used a cheap spray gel instead, that might be the reason why my salt spray doesn't have much hold.
I sprayed some on the roots of my damp hair, and then blow dried. Immediately, I saw volume in my hair, like styled with clay, but looked and felt weightless and natural.
BUT there's a downside to this homemade salt spray. Yes, it is cheap, costs almost nothing, but it's also homemade, which means it is not for keeps. It will turn bad in a few days, unless you add preservatives. Mine starts to smell after 3 days. And I sterilized my bottle and tools with 90% alcohol before I made it, and used distilled water, but still I think bacterium are building up in the bottle. It means that I have to re-make a new bottle every few days, it is annoying enough that I would rather spend $15 to buy a bottle of branded salt spray that could be kept for 1 or 2 years. Seriously.

Thanks to erotas13. I also have lots of very fine hair, so I made her recipe (used a different gel, but whatever). Works great. I spray it on dry hair, scrunch and have fabulous waves. HG spray. Definitely use a heavier conditioner though as this can still be drying.

I had all this sea salt left over after using it to clean my ear piercings, so I decided to try making a sea salt mixture after reading about it in a magazine. I filled an empty mac fix+ bottle with warm water and added around a tablespoon or less of sea salt and a tiny squirt of my john frieda shine shock leave in glosser. The only method I have used this with so far, is after braiding my hair, I sprayed it generously and when I woke up, I had some realy nice soft beachy waves! They looked much better than when I normally braid it with no product in. I can't wait to try this with different hairstyles !

Thank you MUAers for helping me discover this! I make my sea salt hair spray with coarse sea salt, water and a few drops of hair conditioner. I spray it all over my hair until damp, scrunch and let it air dry. Alternatively, after scrunching, I'll twist it into a bun and hold it in place with pins or a band while I put on makeup. And when I shake them loose later on, I get awesome volume and lovely wavy curls that don't look too contrived.
The only downside is the curls don't last very long, but nothing a little spritz of good hairspray won't fix. Love, love, love the natural, effortless waves that form. I have black, straight and fine Asian hair.

I was doing all this research for the perfect beach sea salt spray...when I came across these recipes. So awesome!! I tried it last night with some finely ground sea salt (2 tsp), Herbal essence conditioner mixed with Wen's lavender almond deep conditioner (just short of 1 tsp combined), and some spritzes of extra strong hold hairspray (have yet to try gel...didn't have any on me at the time). Worked like a charm :) It left my hair with waves, volume, and softness (probably due to the conditioners I chose). I had to add more salt in the mixture for the waves since 1 tsp wasn't enough. But yeah, just tweak the recipe according to your hair type. I love it! :)

THIS STUFF WORKS!!!! i have tried almost every other sea salt spray that you can find and nothing works as good.
the recipe: 8oz of warm water, 1 tbsp each of sea salt, hair gel and conditioner. mix and put in a spray bottle. on dry straight hair MIST your whole head so it is kinda/mostly damp. Scrunch! but watch the waves b/c the more u do it the more it forms. let it air dry. smooth over the frizz areas with your hair and if it is to tight of wavy or to big run your fingers through it to get the look u want.

I discovered this the other day and I am in LOVE! I have loose curls that end up looking like a big puffball. I hate buying styling products bc they make my hair greasy or crispy. When I was on vacay in Mexico and noticed that my hair looked amazing after swimming in the water.....fast forward to a few days ago, I decided to try some salt, water, and a touch of scented body spray mixed together. OMG, it's a Christmas miracle!!! ...and even better, it's freeeeee!
A must try for all the curly ladies!!!

Let me preface this review with two points: 1. I am cheap, and 2. I am lazy (when it comes to doing my hair), and this solution satisfies both.

I have semi-fine, normal-to-dry hair that I rarely style with heat, and it's straight from the roots to about my ears and then starts this half-assed limp wavy deal. Trying to sleep with curlers in always results in crazy Medusa hair, and I'm not about to sacrifice an extra half-hour of sleep to shower and blow-dry or iron my hair straight. Plus I prefer to shower at night, and I'm sure everyone's familiar with what happens when you sleep with wet hair.

With the sea salt mixture, I hang my head over the bathtub and spray a healthy amount into it, scrunch well, and go, in about three minutes tops. It soaks out any funky bed-wrinkles, and as it dries my hair settles into some fantastic piece-y waves. For evening, refresh with a little more spray, and maybe wrap some random pieces around a curling iron to get VS-model hair. My hair already has a lot of natural body, but if you need more you can spray your roots and blast with the hair dryer.

My formula (you can find about a hundred different recipes online) consists of about a tablespoon of sea salt in 6-8oz of water, a dollop of cheap Suave conditioner, and a slightly smaller dollop of cheap hair gel. (You actually WANT to go cheap on the conditioner and gel, because they're a thinner consistency and will mix easier in the water.) Tips: leave some room in the spray bottle for shaking, and use warm water to dissolve the ingredients together well when you first mix it up.

This spray can be as pricy or inexpensive as you want to make it, and you can adjust it to work for your specific hair type. There's no reason not to try this!

Boy, I LOVE MakeupAlley for showing me the light! I've got 2 versions in my beauty cabinet: 1 tablespoon sea salt + 8 oz. plain tap + some citrus essential oil sprayed at the roots works great as a between-shampoo refresher (I try to skip a day of hair washing now and then b/c I know over-washing can be bad for the locks). The saltiness dries out excess oil for me, adds texture, and the essential oil adds a fresh scent. The 2nd version I made with Herbal Essences Hello Hydration Orchid & Coconut Milk conditioner and is great when you want a softer beachy scented "clumpiness". This is too easy and too good not to try. continued >>

This is by far the most amazing hair care item I've ever used. I have thick hair but it is also very straight and goes flat within minutes of styling it - I've used curlers, mousse, hairspray and various other 'volumizing' products which dont really do much. I was tempted by the sea sprays that were sold in stores but when I realized you could basically make this yourself, decided to try that first - finely ground sea salt and a dab of conditioner mixed with water in a spray bottle - cheap and easy. And it works! My hair looks incredibly full of volume and it lasts until I wash my hair. I really cant say enough about using this spray, it creates sexy beach hair everyday. I pretty much will not wear my hair down without using this spray.

I learned this recipe from another MUAer, God bless her. I recently used up the very last of my John Frieda Ocean Waves Sea Spray; I almost wept. It's been discontinued for quite a while but I have this tendency to buy backups of my must-haves. Anyway, I began checking MUA for a good alternatives, and was given this recipe. I filled an 8 oz. spray bottle with filtered water, then added a tablespoon of sea salt and a couple of squirts of Suave's Tropical Coconut Conditioner. I shake it up before I spray it, just like JF's sea spray. And I have to say, this works better for me. Not to mention I had everything I needed without buying anything.
