This is my nighttime facial cleansing bar. I have overall good skin, but I do have some occasional concerns (blackheads and unexplained minor breakouts or congestion from time to time). This soap seriously does its thing to calm my skin. It is left feeling soft and smooth, and it looks great. I will continue to buy this for my night cleansing ritual.
This bar saved my skin! I broke out badly on my chin, nose and forehead, due to hormones and an oil cleansing method that disagreed with me. All attempts to clear and heal my skin just perpetuated the pimples, drying and inflammation. It got to the point that I pretty much had a beard of zits and a dry, peeling nose. I bought this bar on a whim and I'm so incredibly pleased with it. Two days into washing with the bar, I could feel my pores emptying and shrinking. Truly amazing! My regimen for clearer skin also included Aveeno Clear Complexion moisturizer on my problem areas and Cerave facial lotion on my clear spots. My skin is quickly going back to normal!
I was a fan of their bump preventer, and because it was so hard to find, I signed up for emails at their site. I was offered a survey and coupons so I did it, not even having been able to try most of their stuff yet. So when they came, it was one for each type of product, (only at specific stores which was difficult since they didn't always have everything in stock) so I browsed the soaps and decided I'd try this one, which is the easiest to find thankfully. I intended it for body and I'm not THAT bad on my body, but I figured my husband could use it too and I do occasionally touch spots on my back and arms that make it look even worse than it is. I had used Giovanni black soap before and it really wasn't that great. It made my face dry and it was noneffective on my body. I also love that this had the Shea in it.
So I was scratching my back and though, let me stop. I tried this soap and wow. What a difference. It lathers like a dream and my skin was soft, moisturized, the bumps went down. And the smell is so nice. Wow. This is weird to say, but my underarms look like heaven. I use their bump preventer after epilating, but now they are so smooth and no ingrown hair or irritation! Then I figured, let me try this on my face. At first it was incredible, left my skin soft and dried out my pimples. My skin felt brighter but not tight. I've been using it for a about 2 weeks or so and ruled out/wrote down everything else to really see if this worked. About a week ago I had badly broken out and picked at skin. It's amazing now. I hardly used moisturizer because I was cutting things out, but thankfully this didn't dry me out. I've found my HG. I cut out all chemicals too and my skin is only better because of that. The only thing is you have to be careful of you eyes, because it *is* a soap. That's kind of obvious but some cleansers are a little more gentle on the eyes. This stings so just use makeup remover before or after for that. But otherwise it doesn't feel like a soap at all, its so creamy and smooth. It lathers lightly, leaves a slight film feeling but it's not a gross one, its like a moisturized feeling. I have other black soaps but I'm hesitant to try them. Love this.
In a few days time, this product wreaked havoc on my skin! For reference, I'm combination skin type that's sensitive, clog-prone and occasional hormonal acne. I bought this due to the rave reviews on MUA and upon first use I really liked it, smells fresh like anise and lathers up well but it felt like a greasy film was left behind afterwards:/ I continued to use it as it's a natural product so I assumed it would be gentle & healing for my skin but I was way wrong! My skin broke out and was so red and tight from the overdrying that this bar soap caused, after 2 weeks I gladly threw it in the trash and went back to my HG cleanser J&J Purpose. Sensitive skinned gals beware of this product!
I must read a million reviews a year on skin care, acne products, moisturizers, etc.... first one I've written after trying all the other crap that does not work. I've been using this for about 2 weeks and I'm shocked. I was so impressed with the change in my skin in the first few days that instead of forgetting to wash my face at night, I was looking forward to it. Every single day my skin surprises me by looking nicer and feeling smoother - I usually have dry skin, slight to medium acne with the occasional hormonal cyst, and huge pores with tons of blackheads.
Changes I've seen:
Smaller pores & less blackheads
Tighter (firmer) skin tone
Face isnt overly dry as with other products
Smooth texture instead of tough/uneven.
But the reasons I'm reviewing this product beyond the fact that it is the first to do those things for me -
1. A week after starting with this soap, the two calcium or cholesterol deposits on my forehead that have been there for months decided to literally just walk off my face. I would have had to get them removed from the derm like my sister and dad but my face just pushed them out on its own!
2. Within these first 2 weeks I have finally gotten rid of an old cyst on my cheek that must have been there for over 6 months. It originally popped but just slightly flattened out and never went away. It constantly looked like a large mosquito bite. After one week I noticed it was peeling but looked so much better. Now the second week it peeled one last time and its gone! This is crazy! It targets the impurities and eliminates them. I'm so grateful for this bar. If you have any issues with your skin please give this a try! I don't understand why this isn't rediculously popular, there were plenty on the shelves at my target.
I'm reviewing the non-organic version, which I imagine works the same as the organic bar. I found Shea Moisture African Black Soap at Target while on the look for a black soap to combat pesky body acne (especially on my back) that gets worse in hot months. My cousin told me about African black soap a while ago as something she uses to help with pimples, and I didn't give it much thought until my roommate started using it as well years later. It was love at first try! I absolutely LOVE the scent (it's hard to describe- very unique and mild, much like vanilla mixed with cocoa) and consistency. It produces a fairly rich, moisturizing lather, so a little goes a long way. I have been using this for almost three months now, and back pimples are almost non-existent. I am left with smooth, healthy feeling skin- I still use lotion afterward, but have skipped before with no problem, as it does not dry my skin out. Being a black soap, it of course produces a black lather, which if left without rinsing, stains the shower tiles. I just remember to rinse off, not a problem. One bar of this is very big (the original one is bigger than the organic bar) and lasts a long time. I recently started using my second bar, after having used the first one for two months. I recommend this to anyone- it's now my HG soap bar.
I had high hopes for this product.Sadly it did not deliver. I have been using it for the last two months and it has done nothing for my skin. Instead of lessening acne it has caused more small bumps. I kept using it hoping it was something else, but it's not. Just to clarify I only used this on my body, back, chest etc. and not my face. It did however smell good, rinse clean and have exfoliating bits. If you don't have sensitive or blemish prone skin this might work for you.
I'm on my 2nd bar...I mainly use this because it dissolves makeup so easily. I can't really say that it's helped with my acne because when I get to that time of the month, I always have a few break outs here and there. It has a really faint sweet smell and leaves my face feeling clean without the dry feeling or residue buildup that something like Noxzema normally leaves behind (at least on me). $4.99 is a bit pricey imo for a bar soap..but now that I have tried it, I will continue to repurchase. This is great at cleaning makeupbrushes and Beauty Blenders!!!! p.s if your wondering why its black, it because its made with plantains.
This black soap was ok. I got the same good results as I do with imported African black soap. It tightens my skin, and gets it clean, but it also is gentle. The only con is that it does stain your bathtub/shower.
i had tried all the shea moisture soap bar out there. I really like the olive green tea soap version. This is my staples soap that has such a creamyt moisturizing lather that cleans my face happy without stripping my face dry. smells wonderful too!
