Powders -e.l.f. Cosmetics -High Definition Powder - Soft Luminance

on 9/6/2018 8:03:00 AM

I'm surprised by all the negative reviews on this powder! Yes, it has some shimmer, but on the face, it's not super noticeable, rather, it gives a glowy, airbrushed look that I adore! And this is coming from someone whose face tries to recreate the Exxon Valdez disaster on a daily basis!
I use this to set under my eyes, and if I'm wearing foundation or BB cream, my whole face. I really love how it blurs pores and fine lines, and doesn't appear cakey. It keeps shine at bay pretty effectively, but isn't totally matte, so it looks very natural. No breakouts are caused by this powder, and I've been using this for years on my acne-prone skin.
I haven't noticed any flashback in photos, but I don't generally end up in photos with a face-on flash (which is where one might find a problem with a powder like this).
The old packaging was a bit better in that it wasn't messy, but it was bulky. The new packaging is much more streamlined, but if you remove the film over the holes, it'll be a mess. I've learned that taking something sharp to pierce one or two holes in the film is enough to dispense the product without having it explode everywhere. I do, however, like the puff that comes with it.
It's $6, which really is a great price considering the quality. The value for money with this product is astounding.
I'll definitely continue to repurchase as long as e.l.f. still makes this awesome powder!

Brows -e.l.f. Cosmetics -Lock On Liner & Brow Cream

I love this. I saw it at a local store, didn't buy it, spent all night thinking about it, so went back and got it the next day. I got the last one!
Mine is in light brown, and it's plenty dark enough. I have longish, dark eyebrow hairs that have some patches from scars. I don't like a really intense or dark eyebrow, and this is great. You only need the very teeny-tiniest amount on your brush (I use a wee precision eyeliner brush), so I'm pretty sure this one pot will last years.

The lid on mine doesn't close straight, which annoys me aesthetically, but it still seems pretty sealed, so it's not a huge thing. The pot itself is perfect. Robust, with plenty of product, easy to open.

Also, e.l.f is cruelty-free, which is fantastic.

Makeup Brushes -e.l.f. Cosmetics -Studio Flawless Concealer Brush

This brush is not soft. I must have a different product from some of the other reviewers, because this is quite prickly. That said it does work to apply concealer, washes well, and hasn't fallen apart after a year. Because of the softer brushes available at the drugstore, this is below average, so I gave it 2 stars.

BB Cream -e.l.f. Cosmetics -Studio BB Cream SPF 20

on 8/26/2018 10:03:00 PM

I grabbed this in shade Buff which is the second shade, and I'm NC15/20. I thought it would be too dark but it's BB cream so it's more sheer and not as noticable on the skin but it ended up being a great shade match.

However, I merely tested it on my skin before getting ready for bed and the SPF smell is insane. I can still smell it, even though I washed my skin and face. It's very very SPF smelling. Enough that I don't think I want to use it, or will save it for some other time.

The finish was dewy, applied well with my sponge and took all my redness away, but once it sat, it started to gather in the lines around my nose etc.. And started to give a powdery/dry/cakey look. Really weird since it looks dewy from afar.

ETA - tested this for a few hours on a break from work - the SMELL. I smell like a kid going swimming at a pool. So much SPF smell. It also comes off VERY easily. I blotted - and so much color came off my face. Other than the color being a good match and it does leave your skin soft once you remove it --will probably donate because the smell is insane. Also comes in a squeeze tube and is .9 oz. Going to try NYX BB cream instead.

Liquid -e.l.f. Cosmetics -Flawless Finish Foundation

Great foundation for the price (seriously- I like this better than many prestige brands I have tried). I have fair skin, and often lighter shades will still look too orange on me. Not the case with this foundation. The only reason I gave it a 4 versus a 5 is because it is not as full-coverage as I would prefer it to be. That being said, I can achieved my desired results by building it up a little in certain areas of my face. It seems to last as well as any other foundation and will get me through a day at work or evening out. I think it is really unrealistic to expect any makeup to last for more than 8 hours. No problems washing it off. I use a gentle, soap free cleanser and it comes right off. No issues with irritation or break outs. It has a light sent, but it does not bother me. In fact, I am so not bothered by it I honestly can't remember what it smells like, other than there is a light smell. This is my go to foundation and I have repurchased it many times.

Powder -e.l.f. Cosmetics -Beautifully Bare

on 8/23/2018 7:55:00 PM

I have sensitive, dehydration/acne-prone skin that can get clogged easily. I'm also very pale, so I will say the light/fair shade was good.

This looked gorgeous after the first application and totally blurred any texture on my face. I came back to look in the mirror about 3-4 hours later and it looked a bit cakey. Some small bumps on my forehead also stood out. I blotted, reapplied, and it still had a cakey look at that point. I prefer something that looks lighter after touch ups during the day. *Note: I lightly reapplied with a good powder brush, so it was something in the formula.

Lipstick -e.l.f. Cosmetics -Studio Matte Lip Color

I have this in the shade Natural and I. Love. This. Color. At first I thought it was just a cool-toned beige, but once I put it on, it morphed into a mauvey nude, almost verging on a true mauve (grayish light purple). It’s a gorgeous color, looks so sophisticated, and ironically I find it’s more comfortable to wear than e.l.f.’s moisturizing lipstick if I put a balm underneath it. The color is buildable and pretty opaque after a few swipes. I also like the slim packaging and the option of using it as a lip liner, thanks to the sharpener hidden in the bottom. And of course, the price can’t be beat.

Foundations -e.l.f. Cosmetics -Studio HD Mattifying Cream Foundation

This product is everything but mattifying, has good coverage but is not easily spreadable, feels heavy on skin and looks so oily it's gross. It clogged my pores and my sister's too. Acne prone skinned girls beware. Packaging is nice though.

Blush -e.l.f. Cosmetics -Beautifully Bare Blush

I love cream blushes so I purchased the peach and rose versions. I wore the rose color today and I was shocked at how oily the blush felt in the container when I touched it. It was SLICK, like oil slick on my fingers. It spread evenly on my cheeks and dried down/rubbed in quickly. I set it with translucent powder and it’s lasted all day. I would be shocked if this dried out but I’ll watch for that since the first reviewer had issues. I’m rating this five stars because of color pay off, even spread, lasting power, container, and price.

Lipstick -e.l.f. Cosmetics -Studio Moisturizing Lipstick (all colors)

on 8/22/2018 4:37:00 PM

For a $3 lipstick, this stuff is pretty good, but not the best. I got Pink Minx and was surprised at how much I liked the color on me, considering I have cool-toned skin and this shade is more of a warm, yellow-toned pink. It feels a bit dry when applying — the stick is stiff, almost like the lip exfoliators — but I found it doesn’t transfer much and looks fairly matte while moisturizing nicely. I don’t think I’d repurchase, though, because I’m not a fan of the glitter in the formula and it does go on somewhat patchy.

Eyeliner -e.l.f. Cosmetics -Waterproof Gel Eyeliner Pencil

on 8/20/2018 9:48:00 AM

I have a serious love/hate relationship with this eyeliner. In some ways, it performs beautifully. In others, it fails tragically.

I'll get the good points out of the way first:

- The price. At $4, I can't think of a better deal on a cruelty-free, vegan gel liner pencil. That truly is a fantastic price.

- The staying power. This stuff could withstand a monsoon. Typically with gel liners, they will transfer to my upper eyelid (I have slightly hooded eyes) within a couple hours. This liner does not. It's great smudged out and set with a bit of soft black shadow. At the end of the day, it washes off easily, but stays on until you want to take it off.

- The color. This is a very black pencil liner. Usually liners of this kind can lean a little gray, but this is definitely a stark black.

Now for the negative. The packaging. It is a DISASTER. The pencil must be sharpened, which I already don't like, but it's highly problematic. Even with an e.l.f. sharpener, I still run into issues. Every time I sharpen this liner, the tip breaks off and I lose about a half an inch of product. I then have to sharpen much farther down in order to get to the product, and then I have to hope that it won't break again. This is VERY frustrating, as it's resulted in a lot of wasted product. It's clear that this liner is too soft, and doesn't sit properly within the wood packaging. This should have been a twist-up style, and I really hope e.l.f. takes heed from the other reviews I've seen on this product that state the same problem (so I know it's not just a bad batch).

Overall, this is a good product, but the packaging does make me hesitant to purchase again. I likely will since it's so inexpensive, but if another vegan option comes along that performs as well as this does on my eyes, I'll opt for that instead.

Loose Powders -e.l.f. Cosmetics -Studio High Definition Powder

I don't use much powder on my face, dry/sensitive skin. Recently I saw a tip online (Wayne Goss) recommending using no-color powder to enhance blending of eyeshadow. I already had this (Sheer) so gave it a whirl, and it works great! I usually apply just a bit of this over my eye primer (Ulta Nude Matte) just in the crease area (not on lid or under brows), then matte shadow over it in the crease. Keeps the shadow from grabbing and helps it blend more smoothly/evenly. Goss also states this can be used over problem shadows, and that it can help moderate shimmer. (He uses the RCMA powder.)

The best part is it doesn't affect the color of the shadow placed over (or under) it, unlike a base eyeshadow. My lippie rating is for this specific use, I haven't tried this on my face, I don't need a mattifier.

Moisturizers -e.l.f. Cosmetics -Nourishing Night Cream

Like its daily hydration cousin, this does what it says in moisturising, but it also feels heavy and leaves a greasy film on my skin. In my opinion, this is not the best for very oily skin like mine, its more suited for dry skin.
