going to a nail salon vs doing your nails yourself ++

hi all,
i am pretty much new to the world of nails. ive never gone to a salon before, in fact. the reason being, i feel that you can learn to do it on your own very nicely as many of the ladies do here. many of my friends get their nails done at a salon, and sometimes will invite me - but i insist that i like to do my own.

i also think its more cost effective to buy np since you can paint multiple times rather than getting your nails done once a week at a salon. so just out of curiosity, what is your ladies' thoughts about doing your own nails vs going to a salon? :)
